Beta Etiquette

Nonnies, specifically those of you who are beta readers: how do you feel when an author doesn't use your suggestions? I'm in a bit of a situation now, where my beta has suggested some things that I really don't agree with. It's changes that would both mess with the plot, and things regarding the phrasing. I don't want to come off as an entitled author who's butthurt at having her story criticized (and I'm not disregarding every single thing that she pointed out) but there were some things said I really didn't agree with. Will I look like an ass if I politely explain why I don't think [x] is a good idea, and if I don't change every phrase that my beta highlighted as a problem area?

As the author, ultimately, the story belongs to you. A beta can point things out and make suggestions, but at the end of the day, if you don't like a change, you shouldn't make it.

I've played both roles, been author who resists changes and beta who is frustrated by an author's decisions, but that's just the way it goes. It's annoying as a beta to have an author reject a suggestion because of ~style or whatever when it would work better and be more legible if they did something else, but it's equally frustrating to be an author who has a story they want to tell, dammit, and it's their story and if the beta wants to tell something else, maybe they should write it themselves.

Politely explain and then consider it tabled. If the beta brings it up again, you can discuss it with them if you'd like, but we all have different styles of writing and views of characterization. Just be prepared to own it if it turns out later that the beta was right. :)

I've seen more than one fan saying something in the lines of "Of course Cas is not going to be with Dean in Purgatory, we saw him disappear in the last episode". Now, according to the spoilers, it is expected to Dean to be alone in Purgy. OK. But how can this be inferred from that last scene alone? Isn't it common for Castiel to disappear one second and reappear the next? HOW are people thinking that disappearance was the only clue needed to conclude Dean was going to be left alone there?

I was just rewatching the last few episodes of season one, and I was sort of confused by YED's comments about demons like Meg being his children. What does that mean, exactly? Did he create them somehow? Or were they sort of his apprentices? Or is he just referring to any of the demons who work for him as his children?

Especially since lately I find myself instantly back-clicking from id-premises where the author doesn't put a lot of thought into how the trope would work in the world. I recently back-clicked out of soul-bonding story where there was instantaneous at first touch bonding and when the characters started talking about their soul-bonding ceremony to formally announce themselves to family and friends, the character started internally comparing it to types of marriage ceremonies, and my brain broke wondering how a society with soul-bonding would have additionally developed a completely separate practice of religious marriage just like our world's marriages.

So, what do you all think about when you begin world-building? How much world-building do you do before you start writing? Or feel to discuss whatever world-building questions/comments you want. Recs? Good examples? Bad examples?

I LOVE WORLDBUILDING. I'm one of the not-author!anons in that thread, and getting into the grits of how metaphysical or supernatural devices or creatures work is so exciting. It feels like sculpting or watching someone sculpt and pare away all that is unknown or ambiguous and bringing forth the detail and interlocking pieces and narrative superstructures.

I never uh, worldbuild on my own (because I'm horrifically indecisive and not-visionary that way) but I love discovering or finding out repercussions of a major shift, like you mention here with the relationship between soulbonding and cultural marriage structures for recognition of a bond: redundant? Does the soulbounding need to be formally and legally recognized or is it already a form of marriage since it is, theoretically, permanent? I love the sorts of conversations that can spring out of these things, but I don't like being the one making the decisions around them.

John's and Mary's absence from heaven (small spoilers)

Are we ever going to find out where John and Mary are? Ash's line about them being missing sounded like it could be a cool plot, but I guess it's just being abandoned because they can't get JDM back? They could be in Purgatory since Mary was a ghost and I guess John was a demon(?). But I doubt they'll follow through given A) the lack of news about JDM, and B) we're apparently only getting flashbacks to Purgatory.

Ash didn't know Jo or Ellen were dead either though. Plus there's the complication that Ash himself (and Pamela) might have been a projection created by Zachariah to manipulate Sam and Dean.

Yes, I like this. That was something I've been a little saddened about for the past season or two. It felt like the MOTW episodes didn't have any connection to the story - even emotional connection. So I'm glad that this is one of the first things he mentioned.

Okay, meme: to custom or not to custom

Last BB season, I remember quite a bit of discussion about custom comment pages. Many nonnies preferred them to be turned off. Many other nonnies said it didn't matter, since you could always style=mine a layout you hated. But since LJ has changed the basic layout of the comment page, is it any better for readability than custom pages (I hate the font, myself)? Should I be courteous and turn off my custom comment pages, or does it even matter anymore?

I think with style=mine being an option it doesn't really matter if you use custom pages or not. I view everything in my own style, but for the love of god please don't hard code your font, because nothing overrides that. I clicked on a fic the other day and couldn't understand why the page looked blank, until I realised they'd hard coded white font.

How do you title, nonnies? What titles have you encountered that you particularly liked or were particularly put off by? Presumably you can't talk about your favorite of your titles without anon failing, but how did you arrive at them?

I like titles that are atmospheric and give me a feel for what the fic might be about. If I instantly recognize them as a quote or a song title I side-eye the author a little, and the same goes if I find out down the line that they snagged it word for word from another source.

IDK, I'm kinda waiting for the new season to see what happens. I'm not particularly excited about the spoilers, and lately I've been involved with other stuff like the course I'm taking on Coursera, games, money issues, etc. So.. just waitandsee-ing, I guess.
