Why do the people who say this always think that separation is going to solve the problems in a relationship?

Well, it's just a really easy way to
A. add some sort of conflict without having it be brother vs brother.
B. Give a chance to tease out new angles to either brother (if we see them handle cases together and chat about them and bicker/banter every week without anything changing it can be dull tv watching).

It's like trying to improve your relationship with your mother or husband or best friend by not actually working on it with that other person.

It's not so much trying to improve their relationship for me, as wanting the show I watch to be interesting and compelling. I think their relationship is well on its way to being the best combination of strong/healthy it's ever been. What that doesn't do is make for great tv, unless something interesting character-wise is going on. And they can only have the same conversations so many times. 'How are you doing Dean?' 'Shut up. How are you, Sam?' 'Hanging in there.'

So again, a really easy way to make that interesting thing happen is to have the brothers separated. If I get to see Dean working with Important Character B, and Sam working with important character C, and they're both learning about themselves but the plot/focus and the conflict is about getting back to their brother, it would be more fun for me to watch than what we got when they were together in season seven.

If you are both in crises on the order of psychotic breakdown and suicidal depression, and you can't communicate with the person you're closest to about what's going on with you, I find it hard to see that as a strong/healthy relationship. I feel like people are confusing lack of conflict with health here.

They need a breakthrough of the kind that it looked like we might be getting in 7.2. They may not be dealing with a relationship crisis per se, but as long as their relationship isn't strong and present enough to come into play in dealing with their individual crises, there's something seriously wrong.

And the writers didn't solve it either by having Sam and Dean deal with their shit together, or deal with it with other characters, they just became both of them magically fine at the end of the season. That was what made it uninteresting television.

That might be interesting to you, but it's not as interesting to me as something like they teased at the end of 7.2. I really thought that they were finally going to figure out a way for the two of them to use the separate yet shared experiences that they already had to help them understand each other better.

The problem is that instead of the writers following up on that promise, they got fucking lazy.

There once was an episode of X Files where a supernatural event (a space-ship passed over them? don't remember) turned a couple making out in to a fusion of meat, bones and limbs.

Perhaps an episode of that might satisfy the "boys-must-be-together!!!!" fans? An entire season?...

Is it really so weird that some people watch the damn show for Sam and Dean, and not for Sam and Character B and Dean and Character C? The best parts of the X-Files for me were scenes with Mulder and Scully together, and no one told me I was an asshole for liking that

Re: Extended TV Guide spoilers

It's okay to watch the show for Sam and Dean, but not at the expense of individual character development. Sam and Dean have shown no progress in their relationship since season 5 in my opinion. I see to evolvement and growth. Their relationship has become nothing more then a unhealthy codependent soap opera. It's stale and boring. There needs to be some alterations and changes in the relationship. There are plenty of people that are saying that after watching the same co-dependent relationship between Sam and Dean for the past 5 seasons.

Re: Extended TV Guide spoilers

And that's fine, but I'm just saying that some people don't find them with other people as interesting as when they are together, and that maybe the writers should figure out a way to energize their relationship again instead of the separate-them-reunite-them-rinse-and-repeat thing that they do. The writers are lazy--we know this--but I don't think separation is this big salvation that people think it is, and in the meantime I'm more likely to be bored if they are off with characters I don't care as much about.

You might be totally fine with them doing that, and that's awesome, but don't tell me that I'm watching the show wrong because I'd rather have them figure out a way develop them as individuals without making the show two separate stories.

My memory might be bad, because I was in junior high at the time, but I don't think there was tons of outrage whenever Mulder and Scully interacted with other people (prior to Mulder leaving the show). I remember intense dislike of antagonists and women-not-named-Scully, but I don't remember fearing that time would be taken from Mulder and Scully. Granted, I can't remember that show ever having a breakout character.

I watch the show for Sam and Dean as individuals as well as a team, but I have no issues with them having some time apart. This is particular true of the purgatory storyline. I'd love to see Dean's time in purgatory as well as Sam's desperate attempt to get him (and Cas) out. There's so much build up in the finale I really want them to explore that storyline.

Probably because X-Philes weren't swanning around claiming that the show should stop having so many other characters and whining that the show was only good when Mulder and Scully were in the same scene. If anything, I remember people wanting more of their parents, more CSM, more Rufus Mr. X, more Skinner, more Krycek ...

Re: Extended TV Guide spoilers

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There is nothing wrong with watching show for Sam and Dean, for Sam and character B, or Dean and character C (or, heavens forbid, characters B and C). Unfortunately, some people who watch for Sam and Dean don't get this. So they have to keep hammering over and over how show can only follow two characters, how you're in the wrong if you follow other characters other than those, how you CAN'T complain if you feel character B or C was mischaracterized or mistreated, how character B or C are nothing but worthless fanservice, how character B or C are intruding, and so on and so on. THIS is assholish. Not preferring whatever characters you prefer.

There's countless ways to display a preference for a character, without the childish need to bash other characters and their fans.

Oh God, shut up. All people like you and the thread starter, who go on and on about how Sam and Dean's has gotten stale and boring, and needs to build deep relationships with other character are nothing but Cas fans wanting more Dean screentime and bonding for your favorite. I have seen you say this routine over and over again for over three years.

Not liking Cas doesn't mean that I hate all side characters. Cas is actually the only one on Spn that I have come to dislike.

Wanting Sam and Dean to connect and talk doesn't mean I or others like me want all other characters gone either. I love season 1-3 and there was plenty of side characters.

I think part of the problem with Sam and Dean is that they feel like a stifling, codependent unhealthy parent-child relationship. They'v been stuck in this unhealthiness for seven years. It's getting tedious.

I used to be like you and now I don't even know what I want anymore. I don't find either Sam or Dean as individuals all that interesting these days, unfortunately. I wish I did. Separate or together, they both feel so flat and uninspired as characters.

I don't need them together and really wish that they weren't doing Purgatory in flashbacks since this is the ideal form of them being apart that I find interesting, but I think the chances of them becoming interesting again go up if they're in closer proximity.

honestly, I do find that the brothers have way more chemistry with other characters then they do with each other. I just find J2's chemistry kind of dull lately. Not a D/C shipper or a shipper at all, but I find Jensen and Misha have more chemistry then Jared and Jensen lately.
