Re: Extended TV Guide spoilers
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)Agreed. I don't find J2's chemistry mind blowing anymore to be honest. Hell, I'm even bored with J2 fic. I think people have overrated J2's chemistry so much that when we watch them on screen now, it all seems kind of blasé. I don't know, just my opinion. It seems as though the J's, especially Jared, just isn't putting as much effort into his acting opposite Jensen, because Jared is probably so consumed with real life. And now I'm in actor's gossip territory sorry.
Case in point, Sam and Dean (and the two J's chemistry has fallen flat for me the past few seasons).

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)The chemistry isn't there for me either. I've never been a J2 shipper but I could at least see the chemistry before. Now it's like watching paint dry. :/
Though, for me, it feels like Jensen is the one who isn't trying. I've been very impressed with Jared at turns but Jensen's performance has been underwhelming for me for the past two seasons. Sam was the best thing about 7.17, for instance, while Dean just kind of seemed out of it.
Is it actor gossip if we're only talking about their function as actors? If so, I'm sorry too. D:

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)Yep, agreed. J2's chemistry is so boring lately. I think this is probably why there's so many people who want Sam and Dean to separate. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)IDK if that's the reason most people want the separation, but for me personally, I was most strongly in favor of independent boys when the chemistry was very high. I wanted Sam and Dean split up as early as S4 and I consider the chemistry between them stellar in that season. For me, it was more that they seemed to need a break from each other and I hoped they'd get back together afterward.
Add to it that their chemistry with other characters is also lacking and I'm not sure what good it would do to split them up right now. :/ I see Dean as being the worst offender here; I was surprised by how dull I found his scenes with Cas and Meg - Sam at least had good stuff with Jody and the girl from 7.17, plus I thought Jared knocked it out of the freaking park in S6 between acting as regular!Sam and RoboSam.
Re: Extended TV Guide spoilers
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, totally this. Sam's scenes were way better then many of Dean's scenes last season. I've found Dean kind of boring and stagnant since season 6. Sam on the other hand as an individual character, I feel has really grown and shown some progress.
Re: Extended TV Guide spoilers
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)Sam in general has felt to me to be far more sympathetic and intriguing. Dean had a metric fuckton of grimdark loaded on him in 6.06 that made him very dull and uninteresting. He hasn't been stagnant, I'd argue, at least not since S6 because he spent most of S6 and the first half of S7 just gradually getting worse. I'll give you that he's become stagnant in the later half of S7, though.
Sam's grown and shown progress, but it's been a rather quiet sort and it feels like it's dropped off entirely after 7.17. In general though, I've been much more impressed with Jared's acting than with Jensen's. IDK if it's because Jared had better stuff to work with or what. Sam's stuff seems meatier and more enjoyable but Dean's could have been equally so, if the writers had bothered to develop it at all.
I loved the idea of Lisa and Ben and Dean's interactions with them but S6 did just such a shitty, terrible job at developing their characters and how they impacted Dean. They had wonderful potential but it wasn't lived up to. Sam lucked out in that regard; it feels like they wimped out on his storyline after 7.17 as well, but at least he had almost two full seasons of well thought out, well rationalized, and well developed growth.
Re: Extended TV Guide spoilers
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)I found Dean very sympathetic and intriguing in s6. Actually, in a sort of long s6 that ran through 7.3. I began to have a harder time with his character right at 7.4 to 7.5, when the confrontation with his guilt went nowhere except lol Lindbergh baby -- I really wanted it to be a Dean changing point, like 5.4 or 7.18, and it really wasn't. Nor was the Mentalists, another possible turning point. I don't think he was necessarily wrong in his decision to kill Amy, but when it came to the lying to Sam and family does the dirty work, Dean seemed to think that what he needed to do was feel bad about it and let Sam know he'd felt bad about it, rather than recognize a pattern of behavior and change it.
But one of the most frustrating things about s7 Dean for me is that I did see some elements of genuine hope in the latter half of the season, especially with Krissy and in Plucky's, where he seemed to be looking back at his and Sam's past with a more balanced eye and a kind of fellow-feeling with both who he had been and who Sam had been. I can't help thinking that if the writers had taken the elements they had with Dean and arranged them in a pattern, and then brought it to a head at the end of the season, it could have worked. There were actually paths for Dean to grow, it was just like the writers would take one step down them and then stop.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)like 5.4 or 5.18, I meant. Time for dinner.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)People who act like actors (any actor) who have children (especially MALE actors who have stay at home wives to take care of the kid) are so overwhelmed by life that they can no longer deal with their jobs make me LOL IRL.
Re: Extended TV Guide spoilers
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)I think both were a little flat at the end of the season, maybe because the end of the season was flat in general, but mostly I think that Jared in s6 and s7 has been giving a consistently tight and impressive performance. It's true that a lot of it hasn't been with Jensen, since a lot of Sam's stuff has been in his head the last two seasons, or was soulless!Sam where the chemistry was deliberately off, but most of the moments that moved me in s7 were from Sam.
