It seems to be a problem specific to writing comedy for him, rather than an inability to explore character. Hello, Cruel World had a lot of gripping, weighty character exploration. So did Repo Man. I think Reading Is Fundamental did as well, though I do see some problems there with integrating comic elements. Still, responsibility avoiding Cas was the most interesting character exploration in the last quarter of the season to me.

(In fairness, though I'm certainly not a fan of comic Edlund, I think the most egregious character consistency problem with FM was caused by external considerations about fandom's reactions to Gen, and wasn't just Edlund going for comic effect without regard to character as an unintentional literary misjudgment.)

What are you thinking of? I wasn't in the fandom at the time, and missed all the discussion of this!

There's a lot of Gen hate in fandom, both character associations from Ruby and RP wife hate. Having Gen appear playing a version of herself with so much verve was, in a way, a really nice and gutsy in your face to the haters, and on that level I liked it. But Sam and Dean, in the fiction, would naturally have reacted to a Ruby clone (and to the fact that Sam's alter ego was married to her) with horror and loathing. I am pretty sure TPTB pulled their punches on Sam and Dean's reactions in an OOC way to avoid the really unfortunate associations of having Sam and Dean hate Gen.

And I fucking hated that, mainly because the majority of people who watch the show don't even know that Jared and Gen are married, much less that there are a tiny percentage of wackjobs out there that hate her for it. Bringing back such an explosive character as Ruby (and you can't bring back Gen without it really being about Ruby) just for an "in your face to the haters" instead of an actual exploration of the aftermath of her relationship and betrayal of Sam on both him and Dean is offensive to me as a normal, non-goss fan of the show. It wasn't brave of Edlund to me, it was lazy. And then to add in the possible noncon implications just for shits and giggles. Grrrrr.

Ah, I see. I've always been a bit nonplussed by Dean's reaction especially - he thinks Sam being married to fake Ruby is a positive thing? - but hadn't thought to attribute it to that source before. I like the way they played it, though. If I accept the characterization as portrayed, it suggests a lot of interesting things, about Sam, especially.

Also, I think Gen is hilarious and adorable in the ep and would have been very sad if the boys hated her. So. I guess if not-hate is OOC, I'll take it.

Ah. I really liked fictional Gen in the episode and real Gen for doing the episode, but I cannot wrap my mind around any coherent characterization of Sam and Dean that would make their reactions and non-reactions there work for me. It's the one piece of canon that I've made a deliberate decision to not attempt to integrate into my meta understanding.
