I felt with Garth from the beginning like he was being presented as "Look, fans, here is your new fan favorite!" and he's really not -- among fans, at least, he's the least popular of the new characters introduced in s7. Charlie, though I liked her, also had a bit that feeling of a character who was introduced with an "OMG, guys, you're going to love her!" The fact that she worked for me may have been an acting thing, but it may also have been that she contributed a genuine, specific, essential skill for the plot. She felt like she was playing a real function and existed in her own right, rather than being a wacky foil for Sam and Dean.

Yeah, I mean, I'm willing to believe that there is a difference between casual viewers and online fans when it comes to Garth, but 90 percent of why he gets under my skin is that feeling that he's the SPN version of Homer Simpson's Poochie.
