Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:20 am (UTC)(link)And I should say I am extra picky on worldbuilding re: creatures. Because friends may or may not get emails from me whining that a fictional creature's reproductive strategy makes zero sense.
Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:21 am (UTC)(link)No offense, but it's people like yourself that make me afraid to write anything but porny one-offs lol
Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:23 am (UTC)(link)nah, you should worry about me, I'm the person you would love you a pm with a short blurb about how I like your fic, and an essay length of questions after. (which is another form of like for me, but i am weird that way)
Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:31 am (UTC)(link)Oh, God. You do that, too? I thought it was just me. /o\
I mean, if I'm doing that, it more or less means I really like the story ...
Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:34 am (UTC)(link)You kidding? I'm an author and when I get a comment like that, I can't even begin to tell you how amazing I find it and how honored I feel for it. That's the best type of comment! I'm always happy to explain the stuff in my stories. It means a lot that anyone cares enough about them to ask. :D
Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:35 am (UTC)(link)Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:41 am (UTC)(link)I think tolerance can vary? Sometimes I barge in like an overeager puppy (and authors have been very responsive and nice). Sometimes, I start off more cautious, and get a flattered author like the praise but clearly isn't interested in answering questions.
(I personally would be thrilled to get long, intensive comments like that, because they are basically a labor of love in and of themselves. I've enjoyed it when my stories have sparked debate between readers in the comments, too).
Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:51 am (UTC)(link)I have a really hard time when I get comments like that. On the one hand, I want to just start gushing, because I tend to separate the story and characters from myself as actively writing it. And I just want to sit around and talk about world building and characterization and all sorts of things.
But on the other hand, it feels kind of...masturbatory? And if I begin to write a response I start to think about how I probably sound like a giant tool. So I sometimes instead pull back and just leave a generic thank you that hints at the questions the commenter brought up.
Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 04:04 am (UTC)(link)But if I get a "thanks" in response to a long and thought-out comment, I am probably going to run away and lick my wounds and never say anything on any of your stories ever again, because I'm convinced I overstepped and you hate me. :(
Re: World-Building
(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 03:30 am (UTC)(link)Ha! Well, if it's any comfort to you, I'll often like the story, generally speaking, and I'm fully aware that I'm completely ridiculous. What I really want is for the story to make sense (which factors in porny one-offs, too!). :)
Also, I'm not talking really nit picky biology. I'm talking contradictory things, like the creature mates for life, but reproduces asexually, and also doesn't care for its young. So why does the species mate for life, exactly?
