nah, you should worry about me, I'm the person you would love you a pm with a short blurb about how I like your fic, and an essay length of questions after. (which is another form of like for me, but i am weird that way)

Oh, God. You do that, too? I thought it was just me. /o\

I mean, if I'm doing that, it more or less means I really like the story ...

You kidding? I'm an author and when I get a comment like that, I can't even begin to tell you how amazing I find it and how honored I feel for it. That's the best type of comment! I'm always happy to explain the stuff in my stories. It means a lot that anyone cares enough about them to ask. :D

I think tolerance can vary? Sometimes I barge in like an overeager puppy (and authors have been very responsive and nice). Sometimes, I start off more cautious, and get a flattered author like the praise but clearly isn't interested in answering questions.

(I personally would be thrilled to get long, intensive comments like that, because they are basically a labor of love in and of themselves. I've enjoyed it when my stories have sparked debate between readers in the comments, too).

I have a really hard time when I get comments like that. On the one hand, I want to just start gushing, because I tend to separate the story and characters from myself as actively writing it. And I just want to sit around and talk about world building and characterization and all sorts of things.

But on the other hand, it feels kind of...masturbatory? And if I begin to write a response I start to think about how I probably sound like a giant tool. So I sometimes instead pull back and just leave a generic thank you that hints at the questions the commenter brought up.

But if I get a "thanks" in response to a long and thought-out comment, I am probably going to run away and lick my wounds and never say anything on any of your stories ever again, because I'm convinced I overstepped and you hate me. :(
