Recurring characters are rare on "Supernatural," especially lately, as the Winchesters have lost old friends like Bobby and Rufus. Fortunately, while Dean was busy in Purgatory and Sam was busy having picnics in the park, there were still a few hunters left to keep people safe. Zap2it has exclusively confirmed that an old friend of the Winchesters' will return this year to help Sam and Dean out on a case. (Though Dean might object to that description.)

"Lost" actor Jon Gries will return this season as Martin Creaser, a hunter who helped John Winchester out multiple times while he was alive. Fans will remember Martin from the Season 5 episode "Sam, Interrupted," in which Sam and Dean found him in a mental institution after the trauma of hunting got the better of him.

Now, Martin is out of the loony bin and back on the job. As we already reported, in the Halloween episode, Sam will finally come face-to-face with Benny, Dean's vampire pal from Purgatory. Suffice to say that Sam won't exactly be inviting Benny to join the family.

In the upcoming episode "Citizen Fang," Sam asks Martin to keep an eye on Benny after some unexplained deaths in Benny's hometown. Dean won't be particularly happy about it -- and when Martin finds out that a Winchester has teamed up with a vampire, he will not be impressed.

It's been up for about 24 hours, so I thought this would be a reasonable time where I could get away with making some word clouds (and avoiding all of my actual responsibilities \o/)

Twenty people so far have answered the poll. Roughly half of them prefer J2. (Roughly because one or two people picked two OTPs and I had to squint a bit before I decided which they ~probably liked more).

There are three word clouds. The first is all of our ships, all together. The second is ships by those whose favorite was J2, and the third is ships by those whose favorite is something other than J2.

It seems to me that meme isn't very representative of the RPF Fandom (or some other explanation)- as there really isn't much fanwork for some of our more popular ships. There are probably other sciency things to glean from the respondents, but I focused on the pretty.

In between gathering scoops, I’m in the process of deciding what I’ll be wearing for the big night. So far, I’ve narrowed my options down to: an Observer, the Human Being, or bored single person. I know where I’m leaning but feel free to weigh in if you have a chance.

If you, like me, are still haunted by the image of Castiel calling out to Dean in Purgatory, sit back. I have some interesting intel for you.

EW Daily Poll: Which pleasure is guiltier?

While talking to Misha Collins about his charitable scavenger hunt (more about that here), he also confirmed a hunch we’d had about the last time Dean saw Cas. It was, in fact, while Dean was exiting Purgatory. But there’s much more to it than that. “That very moment is a pivotal moment. I think Dean is confused about what happened at that moment and won’t actually find out what happened then until episode 7,” he reveals. “It’s going to take a while to see that moment play out.” Suffice to say the truth hurts — especially on this show.

But when Cas does return topside, look for him to be “reinvigorated with a sense of purpose,” says Collins. “He essentially feels like he has to do good in order to right the wrongs of his past. So he starts to collaborate with Sam and Dean for that reason — so that he can continue to try to make things right. He’s no longer paying penance, really, because it’s no longer an act of suffering for him. But he’s doing his best to right the wrongs of his past.” Doing so won’t be as easy as he hopes, however. “He’s doing that in ways that help Sam and Dean and then, ultimately, it might also make life — as per usual with the Supernatural universe — complicated for Sam and Dean. At first, it seems like everything is hunky dory. But things quickly fall apart.”

Upthread, the idea of a Gen-centric Teensy Bang was thrown around. Basically, it's like a bb, but authors only have to write 5k (artists still make one piece of art). So, now I have Important Questions!

1) Would you be interested in participating in a Genevieve Teensy Bang?

2) If so, would you plan to sign up as an author or artist?

3) If you're an artist, would you be happy to make a piece of art for a short fic? Or would you rather not have a teensy bang format? I'm open to suggestions.

4) What is your ideal time frame? How long do you think you would need as an author/artist? One month? Longer? Would you prefer a winter/spring/summer deadline?

I have pairing ennui. It's been a long time since I read a D/C story that excited and interested me (Whit Merule's March-Stalkers Mighty is the only one to have really piqued my interest in months, though I admit that I haven't read all of DCBB yet).

Has anyone read any new or newish or mostly unknown D/C that was especially cool or interesting? I generally don't like woobie!Cas and love AUs and long-fic.

(Also, if we want to add subthreads for other pairings to this thread or lots of other threads for recs with other pairings, that is 100% cool by me. The more the merrier!).

I would love some long, plotty fics that include interesting Ruby. Ruby as sometime-ally, Ruby redemption, even just AUs where Ruby survives 4.22 and is a two-dimensional antagonist instead of a one-dimensional one (as she so often is in fic).

"You've also got to remember that Dean has just spent, basically, a year in the trenches. He was off at war."

In his own way, Dean, too, is struggling to find his own footing in their old life. "There was reference to this a few seasons ago, but I don't think it was as spot on as it is now. In the movie 'The Hurt Locker' when Jeremy Renner's character is back stateside and he's like standing in a cereal aisle with a wall of choices of cereal, and he's standing there going 'This is not normal.' Because what was normal to him was mortar sounds and gunfire and being in the trenches and having to wake up every day wondering if you're going to live to go to sleep that night," Jensen recalls. "Dean has just basically come back from essentially, that. He was at war in Purgatory."

It looks like Dean will deal with the reality of Sam leaving only if Sam actually leaves. "As of right now I think Dean is kind of sweeping it under the rug and not wanting to deal with the fact that his brother was a pansy for a year," Jensen laughs.

Sam's birthday

So, out of curiosity, does Sam never having had a birthday cake before 8.03 just not make any sense to anyone else?

I could theoretically buy him not having had one as a kid because the Winchesters didn't really focus on things like that but even so, Sam got Christmas presents. If Dean made enough of an effort to get Christmas presents, why wouldn't he have done the same for Sam's birthday as well? At least for a few years? And even if Dean didn't, how would Sam have made it through university without his friends throwing him a party at least once? Or Jess at a minimum? Surely Amelia can still be the ~love of Sam's life~ without downplaying Jess that much. Hell, one of the only things we know about Jess is that she baked!

I always LOL'ed at the badfic concept where everyone forgets Sam's birthday and now I'm all :/ because it's apparently canon. The minimization of Sam/Jess to boost Sam/Amelia is also making me far more annoyed with Sam/Amelia than it probably should be. Apparently I've got all kinds of Sam/Jess feelings and I wasn't even aware of them until now.

SPN Marathon on TNT

I noticed that TNT is running a 12 hour block of SPN episodes this weekend. It starts 12PM Saturday afternoon and runs until 12PM Sunday. It's a mix of episodes from S1 through S6, in random order.

Any fellow nonnies get this affiliate? I think it might be a decent sized market. I was double checking my dvr timers last night and realized there was nothing set for next week's SPN ep. I brought up my guide and in Arrow and SPN's timeslots it has "2012 Village Halloween Parade" airing instead. So no 8.05 for viewers with this affiliate?

Vessel Consent Issues - Possible Science

I've read on occasion that a few nonnies have issues with Cas/Anyone because of Jimmy possibly hanging around. So I have a few questions?

How much thought do you put into vessel consent in PWP? in longfic?

If you have vessel consent issues in fic, what can be done to alleviate your concern, if anything?

If Jimmy died, does this negate vessel concerns because Cas is the sole inhabitant?

Does Clairstiel's "You won't die or age. If this last year was painful for you, picture a hundred, a thousand more like it." make you think Jimmy could make it through 2 archangel attacks and the leviathan?

In PWP (fluff, kink, whatever) I assume Jimmy's long gone. Or it's AU so it's not an issue. In longfic if I'm reading and it doesn't specify, then I'll go with the assumption that he's dead (my personal headcanon). If it's about some other angel that we know less about, then I'm going to be a bit more concerned.

Just a throwaway line is good enough for me, honestly. Although, I don't read much S4 fic which is where my own concerns would come into play, more.

For me personally, it does. I'm also rather inclined to think there's some difference between a body originally belonging to Jimmy and one of the many that have been remade for Castiel upon resurrection.

I always assume that Castiel wasn't really imagining his own death when he said that. Let's say Castiel was a spaceship, and he was giving Jimmy a warning before entering: "You won't die on the trip, you won't age, it'll be really boring." Spaceship!Castiel probably isn't thinking about situations where the spaceship blows up when he's saying this.

Nonnies, I know I have tomorrow and all of Friday to keep going at this, but I'm getting really worried. My Sassy Minibang is over 10K, but the plot is far, far from complete. Is it okay if it's really sketched out towards the end? I'm not going to have time to finish it completely before I have to submit it, but I've been looking forward to this challenge for a long time, and I don't want to be kicked out because things are too outlined or something.
