What the hell? I have pretty much accepted that they threw Sam's characterization out the window to create this "drama", but why are they also writing Dean like an ass who cannot even begin to fathom why Sam might want to get out of the hunting life? Dean himself spent the last 3 years being miserable and depressed and he knew that it was because of hunting. He can't be that self-involved that he doesn't understand that other people have feelings too...can he?

I don't know if it's accidental (he hadn't had time to catch up when establishing stuff) or deliberate ("hot mess"), but it does seem like s6 and s7 have very little impact on Carver. Now, Dean was certainly suicidally depressed at points in s5, but I don't think that was about hunting, really; more the big mytharc stuff and Sam. It was in s6, especially, that his depression was very strongly linked to his role as hunter. So it doesn't surprise me that current canon Dean can't relate his feelings then to Sam's feelings now, because I'm not sure his feelings then 100% exist in this timeline.

I've had this impression as well. It's stronger for me in terms of Dean's characterization but I feel it with Sam's also. Dean's depression in S4 and S5 felt much more about his time in Hell and the weight of having broken the first seal and being unable to save the world (plus issues with Sam).

The switch in S6 to associate hunting with being a monster was something I really disagreed with, tbh. It didn't seem to fit given the rest of Dean's characterization and how Dean had, before that point, viewed hunting as something that would allow him to save people. And while his concept of self worth hasn't ever been that great, it's never been hunting he's associated as the thing dragging him down. It's always been himself. What he, Dean Winchester, is capable of doing. When he talks about that in Devil's Trap, it's not "I'm worried about what I get like when I'm on the hunt" but "The things I'd do or kill for you and Dad scare me." It's his willingness to take drastic, even damning measures for his family that concerns him, not hunting.

So I'm actually glad to see them back away from that. I just wish it could have been done in a manner that didn't also seem to completely dismiss what Gamble had introduced.

Given how fucking shitty they were I'm good with that. I'm perfectly happy to imagine they never happened.

It doesn't matter why it's happening, the blame is laid at Carver's feet. If he came in to take over a show after being away for two seasons and couldn't be bothered to make time to catch up on what happened while he was away, that is massively unprofessional and lazy. If he came in and is willfully ignoring everything that happened in that same time span, that's massively unprofessional, lazy, and dumb. If you play pick and choose with characterization like that, you're never going to get a worthwhile product out of it. Ever.

I honestly think it's willful, because he isn't even consistent in what level of characterization he's cutting out. He's chopped Sam straight back to S1, but somehow Dean still exists in a post S4 state at the least. It's hard to pinpoint further than that. If Carver was just ignorant and didn't catch up, they'd both be a lot closer to S5 characters, and be at the same point in their development, instead of all lopsided.

I disagree; Dean's depression worsened in S7 and S8, but his dissatisfaction with the hunting life and his issues about it was pretty evident in S3-5 as well (with episodes focusing on it, even; just think of Dream a Little Dream and What is and What Should Never Be).

The problem I had with S7-8 was mostly that his issues never really went anywhere and weren't dealt with, but their origin can be traced much further back.
