People said the same thing about 8.3, though, and he wasn't in the ep any less.

Umm, no. People said it will be Dean-focused cause that's what Jensen said at one con (and that the Amelia park thing will only be a really short flashback). No one said it will be Sam-lite or that Jared had time off during filming - which he didn't.
I think you mean Edlund's 8.05 - that one had Jared free time in Austin, and is suppose to be Sam-light (but we haven't seen it yet). 8.09 (the Benny one) had also lots of Jared Austin sightings during the week, and now 8.10 this week.

8.3 wasn't Dean-focused, though.

Tell that to Jensen. He started that one - literally.

Whatever Jensen said probably made sense in context and doesn't excuse the fan-spin before the ep aired about how it was going to be all about Dean and Sam was going to hardly be in it and he would have no lines etc. etc. etc.

Overreaction and pre-wank due to a actor's or writer's comment?? Gasp, you don't say. But Jensen usually is a reliable source, so frustrated Sam fans went overboard with it after the first two disappointing episodes (and really while Sam was in it more than they predicted, I doubt the fans were pleasantly surprised :|).

/And seriously are you sure this was about 8.03 because I can't remember coming across the "Sam will hardly be in it" in context of that episode. For 8.05 on the other hand - the big Benny/protective!Dean/jealous!Cas Purgatory episodes with SE Hinton's set report and the spoiler about Sam sitting in the hotel room reflecting + Jared only filming 2-3 days.

Yes, I'm sure it was about 8.3. It wasn't just Jensen's comment. People assumed all of Sam's end of the ep was going to be flashbacks and then freaked when they heard the flashback was short, and the utter bullshit about Jared only having Amelia scenes was happening long before Jensen said anything.

I think you are misremembering. We knew right from SDCC that the Amelia flashback in that ep was very brief, and the people I saw who were concerned about it were concerned about a lack of backstory/flashbacks, not an excess.

I don't think anyone said Jared's filming schedule was light for 8.3. The filming spoilers have been 8.4, light on both brothers, 8.5, 8.9. and 8.10, all having substantial time off for Jared. And filming schedules have been pretty reliable indicators in the past. One bibro-lite and three Sam-lite eps in the first ten really is a bit much, even if Sam has really intense stuff in the eps in question. Especially when they are doing an emotional rather than plotty storyline, there's a real limit to how much they can do without just plain screentime.

So I really, really hope they have some Sam-heavy eps planned for the second half of the season.

8.11 a.k.a. the LARPing episode is also suppose to be Winchester-lite. And still not even a tinny hint of a hope for a Sam-heavy episode at all, even though they get scripts in advance, so nothing till at least 8.13/8.14 if they are filming 8.10.

But those weren't similar ~facts~ at all. The only "spoiler" about 8.3 was that Jensen said it was heavier on Dean scenes than the last two he directed. People inferred from there.

That's actually not a fact (or link?), but even if it's true: there could be scheduling reasons for that that have zero effect on how much Sam is in the ep. So, no, it's not categorically different. The spoilers about 8.3 were true; they just didn't have the result that people were claiming they would.

Jared was in Austin for the week when they were shooting the bulk of 8.5 (I'd bring over links but we'd probably end up getting too far into actor gossip). He and Liane (Amelia) shot a few days the week prior before he left.

If you look at episodes where Jared has had off that much time in the past (In the Beginning or the End, for example), it does usually correlate to how much Sam is in the episode.

That was the week SE Hinton was there, right? Yeah, iirc, he shot at least some of the 3 days they filmed before Vancon weekend, and then Hinton didn't see Jared on set for the rest of the episode's filming until late Friday of its last day to shoot the scene with Sam and Dean yelling at each other.

Yup, that's the one. Jared & Liane shot Thurs/Fri and then he was gone until the yelling scene lol. The rest of the week was Dean, Cas, and Benny

I've been spoiler free until the last two weeks, but this news of Jared being off so much is really getting me down. Jared not being on set is a pretty clear indicator of how much Sam we will get. Which is apparently not much. In light of that I can't really come up with any compelling reasons to watch the rest of this season. Which sucks.

I've already expressed my hope that someone will make a vid of stitched-together Sam scenes this season so I can get the few minutes of each show that I actually enjoy without putting up with the rest.

I just want to repeat that and add that I'm serious. I would love this. I haven't watched the last two episodes and probably won't watch tonight's unless meme is full of squeeing Samgirls tomorrow. But I do miss Sam.

If someone stitched together all of the Sam scenes from the last two eps would you watch and comment? Because I could be motivated to do it. I don't think we've actually lacked in Sam (especially not in 8.3, I admit 8.2 was Kevin-focused), but it'd be interesting to see what the episodes seem to be about if you concentrate only on Sam.

Hope I'm not anonfailing here. Bit nervous about this, as I've never done this before. Here's 8x02. The first scene looks like Dean & Kevin, but Sam is there. The rest of the scenes have more Sam. I hope to get 8x03 done tomorrow.

I would watch it. I do enjoy other parts of the show, but it's hard for me to enjoy them when there's this crap going on with Sam, or a lack of Sam. I'm not going to bother watching tonight, next week, or episodes 9 and 10 unless the reaction to them is spectacular.

I have often see people accuse Cas/other secondary character fans of watching the show wrong because their favourite is not one of the leads. They say things like "How can you watch the show when he is only in it for five minutes every other episode?" "How can you enjoy the show if you don't like Sam and Dean?" etc.

I never understood this attitude but I think I get it now. It's the people making the accusations that are watching the show wrong. And they are assuming everyone else is like them.
