It's the direction the show is going that's Sam-bashing.

They could have had Sam save Dean.

They could have had Sam try but fail.

They could have had Sam reach a point where he wasn't going to put his life on hold trying, was going to do some living, but had him go on researching.

They could have had Sam break down; it would be understandable enough.

They could have had Sam have good reason to think Dean dead, or they could have had Sam know Dean was in purgatory but have good reason to think it was too dangerous to the world to try to retrieve him.

That they chose none of those options is utterly incomprehensible to me. I hope spoilers are vastly misleading. But I am as Samgirl as they come, and I can't spin the scenario we've been given in any way that can possibly justify Sam.

I just think that we might want to actually watch the episodes before we all start crying out fuck you Carver and talking about how this is the worst thing to ever happen in the history of ever. It might be, but it also might not be. I'm all for speculating about what's going to happen, but we're really just speculating at this point.

But we're not speculating about what might happen. We're talking about what writers and actors who have seen the scripts say does happen.

Sure, it could turn out that Sam is soulless again or something. But it's not like we're just saying hey, what if in s8 Sam gives up on saving Dean from purgatory and enjoys himself? If we had, before these statements from writers and actors came out, we would have been laughed off meme.

And it's just, like, where do they go from here? It's not really the kind of thing you can do a redemption arc for, it reverses Sam's character development rather than taking it in a dark direction, and even if it could be fixed, do we need another season of Sam needing to earn forgiveness and trust?

I'm also thinking that one of the main issues I'm having is the fact that Sam doesn't actually want to start hunting again after Dean is back, and Dean is the one that basically drags him back into it. And that Sam only really gets back to hunting in order to get this "power source" thing that they both really want. So even when they DO reunite, it's not because they want to be together (again) but because there is something they need to find. This is almost literally S1 all over again (power source being the new "let's find Dad"), but with the likelihood of more resentment, because if you listen to Jared, this is the first time ever that Sam's been happy/normal because his family is totally out of the picture. And there are hints that Sam is going to try to keep the normal life during this quest, and possibly even have Amelia return.

And, really, what's in it for Dean at this point? I'm happy that he seems to be on the verge of realizing again that hunting helps people and doesn't make him a monster (even if they are white-washing his issues in the meantime), but why erase the past 7 years and have him hunting with a brother that doesn't even want to be with him?

I'm just so angry for BOTH of the characters.

(p.s. add on that Edlund says they are "frontloading" the season with the brothers' storylines so that they can bring Cas and the angel storyline back to the forefront later in the season)

It seems like Sam's up for the hunt, though, and there haven't been any spoilers suggesting that he resents Dean for getting him involved again. The quest is supposed to be something they both want, and civilian life is supposed to have helped him rediscover what he's fighting for. And it's not like he couldn't say no; I doubt Dean is compelling him at gunpoint or anything.

This is way, way worse than s1 for Sam characterization. And, though maybe they'll gloss Dean's issues over, I haven't seen anything to suggest that Dean characterization is being shafted the way Sam's is. I might be mildly annoyed on Dean's behalf, but I don't think there's the same reason to be utterly furious as there is on the Sam side of things.

Jensen says that Dean is raring to go, but that Sam is "hesitant" so it sounds to me that it isn't necessarily something Sam would choose for himself if there wasn't this quest thing involved. I mean, obviously Dean isn't forcing him, but there is still the idea that if Sam doesn't really want to go then there has to be some kind of internal resentment about it, even if it's not directed straight at Dean. And, really, they have to be hunting together for the sake of the show, but that doesn't mean that they will be into it. Also, Jensen made it sound like Dean was happy to be hunting again in general, but Sam was only hunting because of the quest (i.e. finding Kevin, which seems to be related to that quest) and not because he wants to be hunting normally with Dean again.

I agree wholeheartedly that Sam is getting the shaft worse than anyone, characterization wise.

I wonder if, like, the casual fans who have never rewatched a single episode and have forgotten most of the early season events and motivations are gonna tune in to see S1!Sam and Dean suddenly back on screen and be like, "The fuck are they doing?"

also, we can't afford classic rock so we've decided Dean will become a big fan of Christian rock.

And we listened to everything the fans were saying about the Impala and how impractical it is, so we've decided to replace it with a zippy little pastel coloured smartcar!

Not that it matters very much. The road trip idea is old hat anyway. Sam and Dean and Team Awesome Comedy Angels will organise all their hunting from a luxury Manhattan apartment in future.

Sam has very impractical hair for fighting monsters. We've decided to give him a buzzcut.

Oh, we're going to dress our insanely attractive cast in five layers apiece every episode so you can't enjoy ogling them... wait, they actually do this one.

Sam and Dean are going to give up being hunters and run a coffee shop... except I'd actually watch Sam and Dean Run a Coffeeshop. It would probably be miles better than Supernatural Season 8.

When/Where did Edlund say they were frontloading the season in order to bring Cas and the angels back later? I thought I was being pretty good about being on top of the spoilers but I've yet to see that one.

Oh, give it a rest. This isn't something that ESGs are overreacting to, pretty much everyone has been wtf at Sam's end of the spoilers, Samgirls, Deangirls and Casgirls . It's terrible characterization, unless there's some major explanation we're not being given.

While I don't disagree that people of all stripes aren't too thrilled with the Sam spoilers, there's been an awful lot of OTT explosive "I shall never watch the show again"/"I'm done" overblown reactions about Sam yesterday and today.

Sam isn't the only one who we've had negative seeming spoilers for, so why the hyperfocus on him? Why nothing about how Dean's magically not depressed, loves hunting again, and is keeping secrets about ~Benny and is apparently going to browbeat Sam back into hunting? That's just as significant in terms of "character assassination" IMO, yet we don't have the melodrama over it.

I keep trying to picture how their reunion is even gonna go and this all puts images in my head of Sam being unhappy to see Dean is back and intruding on his new happy and being offended by Dean for being hurt that Sam gave up on him and I just DDDDD:

Meme, tell me this won't happen. This whole business is putting awful thoughts in my head that I never thought could be possible, but now nothing feels sure. :(
