Oh, give it a rest. This isn't something that ESGs are overreacting to, pretty much everyone has been wtf at Sam's end of the spoilers, Samgirls, Deangirls and Casgirls . It's terrible characterization, unless there's some major explanation we're not being given.

While I don't disagree that people of all stripes aren't too thrilled with the Sam spoilers, there's been an awful lot of OTT explosive "I shall never watch the show again"/"I'm done" overblown reactions about Sam yesterday and today.

Sam isn't the only one who we've had negative seeming spoilers for, so why the hyperfocus on him? Why nothing about how Dean's magically not depressed, loves hunting again, and is keeping secrets about ~Benny and is apparently going to browbeat Sam back into hunting? That's just as significant in terms of "character assassination" IMO, yet we don't have the melodrama over it.

Are you serious? Dean's spoilers are great. He's going to have cool purg flashbacks, a new monster character focused on him, best friend Cas, and woobie points for being mistreated by his brother. Again. He's a freaking hero.

He gets to have his Purgatory story done in flashbacks, something the show sucks at and has never once done a good job at handling.

He makes a deal with a monster, then covers it up and lies about it. These are very unsympathetic actions.

There are no Cas spoilers except that Cas is in one of the flashback eps. There's absolutely nothing to show that they're BFF.

The ~woobie mistreated by his brother~ thing? Give me a freaking break. It's no worse than dragging his brother back into hunting when he's made a life for himself elsewhere.

Face it, if Sam were the one with Dean's spoilers, the outrage over them would be exactly the same as would the cries of ~character assassination. Because they're equally bad.

I guess you missed Edlund's comments about "frontloading" the season with brotherly stuff so they can focus on Castiel and the angels in the second half?

Do we know for a fact that Dean lies?

And I also disagree with what you're saying about flashbacks-- see AVSC and ASS.

Dean is going to be justifiably resentful of Sam's behavior. Sam is going to be one who gives up on this thing lots of people care about, the brotherly bond. Not equal.

I'm side-eyeing that pretty majorly (and even moreso the fact that it seems Cas will be able to turn his crazy on and off at will), but I think there's at least a chance Dean's turnaround could be explored during their flashback scenes throughout the season, while Sam's intentions are already being laid out a lot more explicitly now. Which isn't to say there may not be more to it, but the facts coming out of Comic-Con have been pretty upfront and consistent and, historically, what they've said at Comic-Con has generally been what's come to pass pretty accurately, down to their statements sometimes turning up as word-for-word dialogue in the episodes.

I hadn't heard about Cas' crazy but that doesn't sound appealing either. I don't have any faith that Dean's turn around will actually be explored, given how much they've fucked up "and now X has changed after a time skip and we'll show you how in flashbacks!" attempts in both S4 and S6.

I'm sure there's going to be more to it on both sides and though I sound negative, I honestly think both Sam and Dean's stories will be a lot more positive and compelling than the spoilers are making them out to be. It's the excessive wailing and gnashing of teeth specifically over Sam that gets me, since Sam is hardly alone in the suspicious sounding spoilers department.

If everything said about Sam pans out, I'm going to have lost my ability to enjoy or empathize with Sam's character and his relationship with Dean, which is a large enough part of the show that I will have lost my ability to enjoy the show.

If everything said about Dean pans out, I'll still like Dean fine and probably find his storyline a lot more gripping than last year's.

This is why I am upset about the Sam stuff and not about the Dean stuff.

Jealous? No. You don't have to be jealous to find the hyperbolic reaction to Sam's spoilers that have been unyielding for the past 24 hours annoying. Pointing out that Sam isn't the only one who has had wonky characterization brought up isn't jealousy, it's pointing out the truth.

I think one of the reasons people are reacting differently to the Sam and Dean spoilers isn't about their reflection on the characters, it's about the degree to which the Sam spoilers MAKE NO SENSE. Dean working with a monster to get out of purgatory and then being indebted to the monster and covering for him? That may not be 100% sympathetic, but it's not a massive Huh, wut? logic fail. But this from Jared:

"He had no idea where to even start. When Dean when to Hell, (Sam) knew he was in Hell, there was a crossroads deal you go to Hell after that. Sam went to the box, Dean knew he was in the box. Now, maybe he’s in Paris, he’s at the Louvre. There’s no guidelines.

I think Sam was finally able to go, “You know, they’ve vanished, probably not good, Kevin and the King of Hell are gone, who knows where, he doesn’t know where to start. I’ve given enough, given it all, I’ve died, (many times we joke).” I think Sam is able to walk away (with) a storied career, from a successful career hunting."

If that's accurate, how does it compute? Sam had plenty of places to start, just as he would for the research for any case. Dean's disappearance coincided with killing Dick with the bone. Sam has sources on Dick, he has sources on Leviathans, he knows where they come from, he has sources on the bone, he knows where the components come from. "Sam meets a lot of dead ends and runs out of resources" would make sense, but Sam not knowing where to start? He faced a very, very similar situation in the Chronos episode, with the same lack of resources, and he started the obvious way: researching in some books.

I mean, in what possible universe does "Sam just throws up his hands and quits" sound like a good idea?

I keep trying to picture how their reunion is even gonna go and this all puts images in my head of Sam being unhappy to see Dean is back and intruding on his new happy and being offended by Dean for being hurt that Sam gave up on him and I just DDDDD:

Meme, tell me this won't happen. This whole business is putting awful thoughts in my head that I never thought could be possible, but now nothing feels sure. :(
