I should have taken the hint that the author got the name of the movie wrong (unless that's sone non-USian variant). I haven't seen the remake, but this story didn't work for me at all. I didnt buy the Js feelings for each other, which seemed to spring out of nothing. Also, there were constant random POV switches, bad writing anyway, but made worse because the author has a real knack for switching to the character whose perspective you least care about at any given moment.

Pretty cute and really fluffy, but a few things kind of threw me.
Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but the author seems to use prom and Homecoming interchangeably and those are two distinctly different dances. And maybe my conservative Midwestern town was just ahead of the game here, but teachers would never separate high schoolers for dancing too closely.

This was a really good re-imagining of the Winchester family, if they had lived in the world of Starship Troopers. But it's less than 2k, so all there's really time for is a teeny tiny glimpse of a very interesting world.

It's completely self-contained, but at the same time I can imagine it as the prologue to a BB-length fic that's just begging to be written.

Anyway, I highly recommend this one. Just know that it's super short.

Misha as Cady doesn't work for me on any level, but I found this depiction of Jensen and Jared just fantastic.

I actually really liked this one. It didn't rely on people knowing the movie to make sense, but had enough nods to the original to keep fans happy. It's not perfect, but it's my favourite so far.

Summary: Jared, heir to an intergalactic shipping company, receives a body slave as a sixteenth birthday gift. Jensen is the first slave Jared has ever spoken to, since household slaves are required to be "altered" when they reach adulthood, fitted with a hearing implant that allows them to hear only their master's voice. As the two of them grow up together and fall in love, Jensen helps Jared to realize the ugly truth about the nature of slavery and the society he has always taken for granted. As adults, Jensen is the only one who sees the divide between Jared's private life and his public facade, and Jared is the only one who sees Jensen for what he is, an equal in every way. A very loose sci-fi interpretation of the Scarlet Pimpernel.

(Ugh, I can't even see meme on LJ again right now. So for now, here, a quick response to one of the few BB's to get posted this week. I plan to copypasta/transfer this over to the LJ FD post as soon as I can post there again.)

A fluffy, glossy version of the futuristic slavery AU.

The story (includes SPOILERS):
Jared is very rich. At 16 he's given His First Bodyslave, Jensen. Jensen was skeevily enslaved for his dead family's inadvertent debt/liability in their own deaths; he was the only survivor. Physically he's a few year's younger than Jared, chronologically a few years older, but he was kept in stasis or something handwavey. Jared immediately likes Jensen and enjoys treating him like a Real Boy instead of just a toy as much as possible. Sex eventually happens (Jensen bottoms in the explicit scenes), but Jared orders Jensen to tell him if Jared does anything he doesn't like. Extra melty layers of fucked-up consent issues!

In this society, slaves are supposed to be surgically altered once they reach (physical?) maturity or something handwavey, anyway around five years after Jared gets Jensen. Having the slaves become selectively deaf so they can only hear Their Master's Voice is mandatory, other modifications (including tattooing, branding, piercing, castration) optional but seemingly common.

Jared loves Jensen so much he illegally doesn't have Jensen's hearing altered (Jensen is apparently a great actor in this AU, as this means years of perfectly pretending he can't hear people saying stupid and apparently quite revolting things in his immediate vicinity), but he does have Jensen's nipples pierced.

Because of the decision to Break The Law and not modify Jensen's hearing, the Js get in touch with the (tiny, for a society this large?) resistance to slavery movement and decide to join in. Jared's money and connections are very very handy for this noble goal a lot of the time, and so is Jensen's unsuspected hearing sometimes. To keep up with politics and power and be most useful, they often have to go to decadent parties where Jensen must be publicly slaved-up, oh woe.

Scene in which all the slaves are geared up as ponies, Jensen finds his plug uncomfortable but knows how much Jared loves it, and Jared providing schmoopy bath-time comforting after the party while pretty much fucking him to sleep (after eventually taking out the Buttplug of Inherently Dubious Consent) follows.

Jared is bored with just providing money and wants to be an action hero, so he starts working on the actual rescues of slaves; like a loving supportive partner who can't say no anyway Jensen supports this.

(Rescued slaves are taken to a semi-secret planet Jared's largely been funding. Hmm, only a few hundred people live there though when it sounds like what with all the planets and space stations there are millions or billions of people and a pretty high percentage of slaves in that society. Where are the other several thousand runaway, bought-free, or rescued slaves?)

Handwavey victory over the rather blandly vague villain (some kind of very pro-slavery government functionary, and the ending -- in which the Js are happy though Jensen's still a slave -- leaves open a sequel or more stories in the 'verse.

Various CW and other RPF characters show up, none are fleshed out (Danneel and Misha a bit more than most, but not a lot). Chad is much more douchebag than lovable in this one.

Good:
SPAG's good, and the story offers enough sweetness between the Js, plotty concepts, and sprinkles of sometimes rather idficcy sex to be an engaging read.
The writer has thought about the inherent consent issues in such a society. Jared plays the "try to treat you as an equal card" most of the time and does actually care about Jensen. From bits of Jensen's POV it's clear that he in turn does love Jared and wants to make him happy but recognizes he has limited agency and that although Jared wants to do right by him, Jared innately has a privileged and to some extent selfish streak that Jensen can't ignore for the sake of greater harmony.

Neither of the Js is shown as completely perfect, nor as a complete asshole, though despite Jared's enthusiastic lip-service to "as equal as possible when I want to which is almost all the time" Jensen as the owned one remains more aware of the inherent problems with their power imbalance throughout. Although the writer gives it a sparkly veneer (by having the Js internalize it as "so much better than any other slave"), their ongoing situation of Jensen remaining Jared's mostly-not-unhappy slave is presented as necessary under the circumstances but with indications that Jensen, even if there are things he might choose not to do differently if he were free, really would like to be free so he could decide for himself exactly what he wanted to say yes to and under which circumstances.

Not so good:
The time jumps and handwaveyness of a lot of it are not great. What's more disappointing is how most of the time we're told not shown that Jared really loves Jensen and barely treats him as a slave and how he helps the resistance. Ditto more telling not showing most of the action, and that Jensen provides awesome snarky commentary on things he hears. A little problematic given that one reason Jared rebels against having Jensen's hearing modified is because he couldn't bear to miss Jensen's commentary -- which means that since it's a Real Plot-Point, more scenes showing it before we were told about it would have been good. There's rather a lot of retrospective musing or comments about things that could have been interest-engaging scenes in the story.

Art:
Missing at this time, whether due to vagaries of LJ woes or other reasons is unknown.

Conclusion:
A nice little outline of a story with many parts sketched in and a scattering of scenes (mostly the sexy ones and the saint!Jared bits and I-wuv-you-because-you're-so-good-to-me-master-of-mine!Jensen ones) given more in-depth treatment. The guiltfree, low-calorie version of a slave AU issuefic. Fun for a fast, uncritical read, but like many low-calorie treats, less satisfying if you try to bite down.

I like this one. It makes me want to know more about what's going on here. Looking at it full on my screen is actually kind of creeping me out, so that's good. I love Sam's hair; his body kind of looks like a cloud of smoke or something though, but maybe that's what the artist was going for.

(Sam kind of looks like CMM to me? I cannot unsee it.)

I read this but I'm not sure whether I liked it. It might make more sense to people who know the movie (I can't honestly remember whether I've ever seen it or not).

I found the story a bit overly full of quips. It's clearly meant to be part of Dean's characterisation, that he's joking around a lot for both his sake and Sam's, but to me it seemed like there wasn't really anything else to the story.

There's a whole bit early on where Dean and Sam pretend to be Feds and talk to State police at a random crime scene, and I was expecting the story to come back to the police and their case, but it never did. It seems that the beginning part was only there to provide an opportunity for jokes, confusion at Boston accents, and for Dean and Sam to eat doughnuts.

THEN they get into the whole favour for a mob boss business that was the reason they were called to Boston in the first place, and go about digging up bodies for a while until they find the right guy (that the boss thinks is going to come back for revenge). And then that's it.

I really liked this. I thought the writer really caught the tone and style of the movie.

The dialogue was cleverly written, and the mystery (while a little predictable) was executed well.
