NGL, I have a thing for egg!fic/fledgling!fic. Sam is an asshole to Gabriel until the very end when he gets his soul back, but I also have a thing for dub-con and weakened!Gabriel (who bottoms, naturally) so overall I inhaled this fic in one go.

I enjoyed this story at the outset. I thought the characterization of Trickster as vicious and inhuman was good, and while I found the reasons given for tricking Sam, Dean & Castiel in particular somewhat unpersuasive, obviously for a story to happen, Trickster needs to focus on them. The author does a good job of showing Gabriel becoming more interested in Sam (who can sense there's something strange about him, and block his thoughts from him, unlike most humans).

Somewhere towards the end, though, it went off the rails. Specifically, Gabriel (the name Trickster uses while posing as a human) is revealed to in fact be an archangel as well as a Trickster, which I found baffling because Castiel is a plain old human in this story, so I had until that point been assuming this was a no-angels-AU written by someone who wanted to explore the Trickster aspect of Gabriel's character. It was just a small detail (in fact, "reveal" is too strong a word - Gabriel just thinks about it in passing) but it undid a lot of the world-building in my mind and so took me out of the story.

Beyond that, the revelation of Sam's feelings and Gabriel's feelings and also the moment of Gabriel finally realizing that, oh hey, Sam is actually a good person deep down and not a deserving target, all came far too quickly and heavy-handedly for my taste. The end in general felt more rushed and I wondered if there was an aspect of deadline/wordcount crunch there.

As I said above, I did like the build-up of Gabriel's interest in Sam but given that Sam mistrusts and shields himself from Gabriel throughout - and even has a serious fight with him in the scene before the reveal - his feelings, and especially the strength of them, seemed to really come out of nowhere. That they were not expressed by Sam himself but rather discovered by Gabriel using his powers changed the impact of that revelation for me. The build-up of Dean/Cas in the background was better done, I thought.

If you're keen on western AUs, the setting in this one is really more window-dressing and once they get to Bobby's, the era becomes almost inessential to the story. This makes sense given it's characters and internal feelings/issues that really drive the plot, but probably would be disappointing to fans of that type of AU.

The story could definitely have used a better beta-read, as there were still plenty of typos (most notably, arch angel instead of archangel throughout).

The art was nice, I felt, and I liked the way each piece was placed within the story. It was very fitting.

four chapters in and I had to give this one up, which was a shame because I LOVE John/Dean and the premise of the story was interesting to me.

So John thought he lost both Mary and Dean in the fire, unbeknownst to him, Dean survived and was living as a street kid/sometimes prostitute. John met Devon (Dean's street name), saved him from some random asshole, and decided to take Devon in. Dean (who's underage) was grateful, seduced John and they became a thing.

What pissed me off was the blatant Sam-bashing in the fic. The author gave (the 11 years old) Sam an older than his age voice, made him absolutely unlikable. Then they turned around and said John didn't deserve the kinda of shit Sam gave him. FFS the kid was 11 and his father took in an underage street hooker!

Most amazing fic to come out of that challenge yet. I was blown away. I loved her characterization of Gabriel's vessel - and the love between Gabriel and Hrafn (the vessel). The details and world-building, the interweaving of mythology and Hrafn's and Gabriel's backstory were really well-done. I could go on, but I'll spare you.
