IT HAS NO RELEVANCE TO THE PLOT OR THE CHARACTERS AT THIS POINT, IT WAS FUCKING TACKY AND THE BACK-STORY WASN'T TOUCHING, IT WAS SAD. SNOTTY SAMMY GOT HIS DAD A XMAS GIF, GOT MAD AT HIM, AND GAVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE OUT OF SPITE.

ALSO, JENSEN DIDN'T WANT TO WEAR IT ANYMORE SO THEY AREN'T GOING TO BRING IT BACK SO SHUUUUUUUUT UUUUUPPPPPPP.

Well, I think the importance comes with what it eventually represented. That even if John wasn't there, Sam would always have Dean. And obviously it was important because Sam wore it the entire time Dean was in Hell, even through demon blood and Ruby and his grief. When Sam wore it, it made him feel like Dean was with him.

So, yeah, I think it was an important representation of the bond they had, at least in the the Dean-as-caretacker role. Dean very pointedly threw it away (in front of Sam) in S5 before "giving up" that caretaker role and going off to commit suicide-by-angel.

But it was a throwaway gift. How is it touching to get a gift that was meant for someone else at the last minute? It obviously meant a lot to Dean, yeah, but I don't see it as being a sentimental moment. Dean's pretty easy to please about that sort of thing.

Plus, I hate Dean being Sam's caretaker so that's a double whammy for me. Sorry, nonnie, it does nothing for me.

Sam wore the amulet while Dean was dead. The show did give it a sentimental to both of them. So don't even with this nonsense that it never meant anything.

It had importance. I understand if some people want to get over it and move on, but why can't it be part of the new season's storyline? It'd be good because it would connect this seasons with past ones.

Imo, can only be that or something to do with their dad.

The amulet was the first thing that I thought of too, but I hope that they don't go there. That would be the cheap and easy route. ...Then again, every time they have a choice to make, they seem to go for the cheap and easy route, so.. :/

It wouldn't really connect the past and new storylines, IMO. It would just shove another aspect of the amulet that had never before mattered and never before come up into our faces. Bad enough that it could somehow supposedly find God out of the blue, for it to be an immeasurable power source as well would just take it too far.

Sam wearing the amulet while Dean was dead is the only reason that it has value to me beyond "that cool necklace that Dean used to wear". I'm with the ayrt in that I hate the backstory for it and then they went and shat over that in S5. Sam wearing it is the only time it's felt meaningful.

I freely admit that rant was ragey and over the top, but what else is an anonmeme for, if not to purge the hatred that's been festering in me since it got thrown away and people started going on and on and ON about it? People are unpleasant about things that 'matter' to me on this meme all the time, why can't I have my moment to baw too?

Because, considering the multitude of issues in this fandom the amulet seems like one of the really lesser ones? Its reappearance in canon would have almost zero impact on anyone that wasn't interested in it, but it would mean the world for a lot of others. No one is insulting anyone for not wanting it back, we're just over here hoping and being wistful and I'm not sure why that's so froth-inspiring to you.

Of all the things to rage over, this just seems like a weird choice and like you're projecting a lot onto this particular group for some reason.

Snotty Sammy? Spite? A neglected kid left with another neglected kid as caretaker finds out that his absentee father has been lying to him about his whole life for his whole life and transfers his faith from his father to his sibling. Yes, of course it was sad. It was sad for Sam, it was sad for Dean, it was even sad for John in a way, but it wasn't about some spoiled kid throwing a temper tantrum.

Somehow Sam-bashing is particularly distasteful directed at a kid.

Yeah. Sam was just a kid (and so was Dean, btw) losing faith in his family. The amulet was a representation of that kid and the only important bond he had in his life.
It's okay not to like the amulet or the chance of it coming back, but how can anyone hate on that child? It's strange.

OP of amulet rant- Most pre-teens have snotty moments, if not years, and I'm sure Sam was no exception. He's not a saint now, and he wasn't one when he was a kid. But if it makes you feel better, I retract the 'snotty' comment. The rest still stands. When you take a gift meant for one person and give it to another because you're mad at them, it's spiteful. Was it understandable given what Sam was going through at the time? Sure. Doesn't negate everything I ranted.

The comment was in no way meant to be Sam-bashing, it's amulet bashing.
