I don't appreciate that assumption, thanks.

Dean stealing gifts =/= Sam giving Dean the amulet. Dean intended those gifts for Sam (ignoring the obvious moral question of stealing the presents of other children). That was his goal, to make Sam happy by giving him presents.

Sam gave Dean the present almost out of spite, like the other anon said. "Well, Dad's not here, so here you go I guess" doesn't ring sentimental to me.

Even worse: Wasn't it originally from Bobby? Okay, presumably, Bobby meant for it to be a present to John from Sam. However, in the end, Sam didn't even choose it or anything.

Now I want to know if Bobby got gifts for Sam and Dean. You'd think he would have, right? But if he did, they'd have had presents on Christmas to open and there's nothing like that.

it's a bit weird. It seems people forget Sam was very young, and that most kids give gifts to their parents they didn't choose or buy themselves. I doubt Sam could steal things at that age succesfully, or that it even crossed his mind tosteal things.

It's not like he has planned to give anything to Dean. It was a 'fuck off, you're my only family' kind of symbol. It's important, very important to the story, because Dean being the only family Sam really had is very relevant to the story.

The significance is not the same than those dolls Dean stole have, it's a different one, but related: Dean being the 'dad', Sam accepting Dean as his only family, more or less.

I've always kind of had the impression that it isn't something Bobby picked out for Sam to give to John (which as one of the anons points out, would be fucking weird, especially in a situation where there are two kids who are not getting gifts) but that Sam expressed a desire to Bobby to get John something and Bobby let him rummage through his big box of spare buttons and plot devices for something appropriate.

But there's a lot more context to that scene.

Sam says the amulet was given to him by Bobby to give to John. Sam decides to make it into a Christmas gift.

Dean gives those gifts to Sam to make him think that John returned when he really didn't.

It makes me think gift sharing wasn't even a thing between the brothers (with a constantly absent father and little money, not surprising), so IMO what was important was the gestures being made here and what they represented for their family's relationships.

Well, it`s not like Dean had planned to get anything for Sam: he just decided to steal something last-minute to make Sam happy. Which isn`t that much different from what Sam did, really: They each gave eachother things intended for other people, because they were trying to make the best of the shitty situation they were in.

I don't really see the spitefulness TBH, since John wasn't there, didn't know about the present, and as far as we know, never found out.

I don't completely agree with your first paragraph but I can definitely understand your perspective.

However, I disagree on the second - the other person doesn't have to know about it for it to be spiteful.

Agreed about your second line. Apparently any nasty thing said behind someone's back is now a-okay because the injured party doesn't find out about it? What?

I don't even think Sam regifting the amulet is that big a deal, certainly not worthy of all this wank, but that bit makes no sense to me at all.

Re: How about speculation about the new mytharc?

Exactly. Dean took John's role, Sam gave Dean John's role. It was fucked up because of John. Neither of them was getting a present for the other as one brother to another, they were both acting out different parts.

Balanced in current time AVSC by Sam giving Dean a Christmas that Dean wanted, and by the fact that on that occasion they DID buy presents explicitly for each other as brothers.

AYRT - I apologize; that was out of line.

"Well, Dad's not here, so here you go I guess" doesn't ring sentimental to me.

I think it was more of a moment where Sam realizes that his Dad may not always be there for him but Dean is. I understand that he initially meant for it to go to John, but I don't really fault a child who's been carted around the country all his life, has never known his mother, and has lived a poor and relatively tough life, for re-gifting something when he had nothing else to give. I don't really see him doing it out of spite. In that moment he's feeling sad and betrayed that his Dad isn't around for Christmas. And I think through interaction with Dean he sees how much Dean is willing to do for Sam to make Christmas good for him and that makes him realize how much Dean is important to him in his life.
