Huh, I didn't even notice the same creation date. I just assumed

spn_kinky_bang was "older" since it's already run a first round. Yeah, the hardcore one is FPF only, but the kinky-bang allows it as well, so it's really kind of superfluous to have two BBs IMO.

Yeah, it seems redundant to me as well, but then I like both RPF and FPF - it's possible that, as an artist signing up for a bang (with such tiny numbers - the Kinky Bang has sod-all fics up for claim), someone might not want to do RPF and would appreciate the guarantee that they're illustrating potentially heavy kink with fictional characters (vs fictional versions of real people)...

Or it could be for some completely different reason :).

I was going to hypothesize that the hardcore one was made fpf only to block the kink-beast that is J2 but if they were made at the same time then I have no idea.

J2 is not that big.

Yes. Yes, it is. The majority of BB posts are J2. The majority of kinkmeme fills are J2. I don't blame anyone for doing a BB of any type that doesn't allow J2. J2 is the biggest pairing in the fandom by far, why shouldn't someone want to do an SPN BB that actually focuses on SPN characters instead of RPS ones?

But it is? Like, no one said it's in ALL THE THINGS (though at times it feels that way), but whenever you have something that is equal opportunity RPF and FPF in Supernatural fandom, J2 usually takes the lion share.

Even if this fandom has other prominent pairings, J2 is plenty huge.

I'm sorry but I don't see the problem, J2 writers and artists love participating in BBs and other challenges but their participation doesn't prevent FPF fans to participate too. What makes you think a FPF challenge will have more FPF fans participating?

J2 is huge, yeah, but I don't know why an artist couldn't just say "I don't want to illustrate RPS." It mostly seems like the two bbs are likely to divide the groups interested in writing/illustrating potentially hardcore kink fic. It would have made more sense for them to join forces, IMO.

The fics don't depend on the artists though, they just get a set list of fics to choose from and if all the non-RPF is gone before they get a pick, they're shit out of luck. If I was an artist who had issues about doing RPF, I might be happy for the second option.

That set, we still don't know why there are two comms, we're just speculating. Maybe two people/groups had the same idea at the same time and neither one wanted to 'give up' theirs and join forces.

I just don't see what the benefit in banning RPS/J2 is? There'll be fewer stories posted, and okay, I guess that's nice for those who don't read RPS/J2, because then every entry is of potential interest to them. But there won't be more FPF stories just because they banned RPS/J2.

If I have an idea for a kinky J2 fic and then see that the hardcore-BB doesn't allow RPS, I simply won't participate, it isn't gonna make me write a pairing that's FPF. So, I think there's really very little point in running a different version of a challenge that already exists just because it restricts the types of fics that are allowed to be written for it.

It'll serve as a showcase for SPN FPF pairings? It doesn't have to be all about the numbers. Sometimes it can just be satisfied with a good bang at the end of it.

Also, if these bangs were made at the same time, so I doubt the intent was to exclude the J2.

But even if it was, that's their right, and there is always the kinky bang, which allows it. Just back the one you like.

Yeah, there's going to be the same amount of fic regardless of which bang it's made for, and at least on meme we're sure to be aware of it all with the FD post.

This. Somebody wanted to make an fpf big bang, and they did. Possibly they didn't know about the other one? There were just signups for a rare pair exchange a month or so ago and now there are sign-ups for another one; the folks organizing the second one said they had never heard of the first one. It happens.

What's the other rare pair exchange? Rarepairfest was the first one I have seen :(

I don't know that that's true. Would we really have so many new long fics year-round as we've had for the last couple of years without all these new bangs?

I don't have a problem with they excluding J2 and why would be? It is not my bigbang. I just can't understand why people act as if excluding J2 more fpf writers will participate.

Well. I don't know who is claiming this, but I can sort of see where they're coming from. I love J2 AUs and will write them for pretty much anything that I can. If I see a bang that looks interesting but excludes RPF, I'll think, "Boo," but then figure out how to write an S/D fic for it. I don't know. I'm probably the minority.

No, I think there are some people like that. If I saw a Tentacle Big Bang and suddenly had thoughts of epic J2M tentacle sounding, but then found out it's an FPF only bang, I might search my brain for something else appropriate just because I like tentacles. Or I might not. It's not a big deal.
