Wow. Well, the more you know. How do you guys manage to get the results in the same day, though? It must drive the mail dudes crazy! Though it's probably a separate service than the regular mail, I assume.

AYRT Well, in terms of general U.S. elections, most places don't conduct their entire voting by mail (though it is where I live): only absentee ballots are done by mail. It is, in fact, regular mail. The ballots are sent out prior to election day, and depending on the state need to be received back by election day or postmarked by election day.

The ballots are not counted as they come in. They're all held until election day. The reason that the results of elections are often known by the end of election day is not because everything is counted within a couple of hours, necessarily. It's because statistical predictions can be made about the ballots counted later based on the ballots counted earlier. The actual counting of the paper ballots is done by machine, but the ballots are all kept in case it's decided a person needs to go through them by hand.

Interesting. I had forgotten, but elections in the US are actually done differently from my in country, with the whole thing with the relevancy of the states and such. So maybe your voting system is just more appropriate for how your elections work.

Well, in my poor latin american country we vote on paper and get the results 3-4 hours later after the voting is closed. The more you know.

I'm in a poor latin american country too! Though obvs not the same as yours. The thing is, the US are huge, so I figured trying to collect and count all those votes by hand would be a nightmare. Most countries down here are smaller.

In my rich European country we vote on paper, too. I thought it was that way around the world?

In my country the people who controls those things want to change paper for machine because it would make it better, faster and it would make us look good because great part of US does it so we won't be so poor in US's eyes.

The nonnie airt made it sound like voting on paper is the worst thing in the world only poor countries do it. I'm in a poor country, we vote on paper but we don't take 2 weeks to ge the results like the airt made it sound.

Well, that's a crock of shit in so many different ways. 1) Changing your voting system might make you seem more democratic or something, but it's not going to make you look less poor in the U.S.'s eyes. 2) The vast majority of the U.S. does *not* use entirely paperless voting. A few states do use it, but a few states also ban it. Here's a state by state map of what is used: http://www.verifiedvoting.org/

There have been massive problems with fraud and errors in the parts of the US where they use voting machines. The machines can be hacked very easily, some of them use punch-out systems which are very inefficient and error-prone (see Florida in Bush's first election!)

In Canada, we mark an X on a pre-printed paper ballot with a serial number. The serial number is torn off before the ballot goes into the box, but the stubs with the serial numbers are kept so that the counts can be verified.

We usually have results within 2-3 hours of the polls closing in the last time zone. The system is efficient, reliable, and simple. No desire to switch to machines from this nonnie!

na I feel the same way, though it certainly is an odd feeling, given the circumstances. I do believe in justice, and I think the world is probably a safer place without him in it, but I have a hard time celebrating loss of life. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with feeling that way, as long as I don't try to shame or lecture people who feel differently.

I recently got a laptop with 10.6, and I have an older comp with 10.4. I would like to make a copy of all the videos, songs and podfic that are in my old computer's iTunes onto my new computer, preferably without having to reset up my playlists. Does anyone know a way to do that?

Late to college

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Life's been pretty disjointed, now I'm about to enter college mid-twenties w/ no work experience. I think it's going to be the worst, if anyone has experienced anything similar and wouldn't mind weighing in, I would really appreciate it. (keywords: unschooling)

Aw, nonnie, I'm sorry you feel this way, but I think you should try to stay positive. I have no idea how helpful this will be, but I can tell you that I met quite a few people who were in the same situation as yours when I was in college, and we all got along just fine. It never seemed to me as if they were having trouble of any kind just because they started college late.

Besides, I went back to school a few years back for a second degree, and at first I thought it would suck because I'd be older than most people, but I actually had a great time. It didn't work out in the end because I couldn't handle the class load while working a full-time job, but I'd definitely go back now if I could. :)

Re: Late to college

Depending on what school you go to, nonnie, I think that you'll be surprised by the variety of ages of people attending college. I went back to continue my education and I'm not exactly fresh out of high school anymore but there were people that were older than me there. And by "older than me," I mean "old enough to be my father." Of course, there were also the kids that I felt had just been let off their mothers' apron strings as well.

I think that you'll do better than what you think because of the fact that, since you're older, you'll have more determination to succeed and ability to buckle down than a lot of your typical college freshmen. You'll also know more about where you want to go in life. A great deal of college kids are aimless not necessarily because of a lack of ambition or a lack of ability but just because they're too young to make those kinds of life-altering choices yet.

I'm a grad student now, so most of my cohort is around my age, but I was also a little older during my undergrad, and I will say this. You won't have the SAME experience as an 18 year old, but frankly, I was perfectly okay with that. (No offense to 18 year olds, I know many that are awesome, but many are also interested in issues that I really don't care about very much at all). I still had a great experience. There might be different avenues to pursue in order to find yourself a good social circle (if you're interested in that) so all I can say is get involved, if at all possible. Join a club, or a choir, or whatever works for you! Not all of the clubs might end up working for you, so just try a different one. I'm involved with a couple, where the age range is quite diverse, not grad student focused at all, and I am having a great time. I've also been a TA and have had several students that were late starters and they were often my favourite students!

so, tldr, I hope you manage to find your groove, and really enjoy your experience :)

Not sure how many anime fans we have here, but I'll give the question a go anyway.

All the shows I'm currently watching are very dude-centric. Some have awesome female characters no doubt, but they aren't the main. I'm in the mood for a female-centric show or two! I don't tend to like slice of life or shoujo romancy kind of stuff, so does anyone have any good recs? Can be finished or currently airing series.

Well drat, where did my subject go? I thought I typed it in for sure. Sorry fellow tracking nonnies!

Can't really help there. Most anime I watch is dude centric because, like you, I'm not interested in slice of life and romance. The closest I can think of is Ouran High School Hostclub - where Haruhi is the main character, but the most important other characters are all male. (She gets mistaken for a boy. Shenanigans ensue.) It also has romance. Hmm. Okay, maybe not the best suggestion.

Helsing is still more or less about Alucard, though there are two very BAMF female characters.

No wait! In Inuyasha Kagome is the main (and POV) character, though. It's still romance-y, but it's also - genre-wise - supernatural/adventure (Girl falls into well, travels into the past, hunts demons youkai.) Maybe try that one?

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Slayers. Main character is female and a sorcerer and while there's some romance, that's not the main point of it. It's actually mostly humor with action, adventure and lots of troll killing. Then there's a dose of angsty plot near the end.

The only caution I would offer is to not watch the dub. This an older one and the dub is particularly cringe worthy.

Asexual peeps?

(Anonymous) 2011-05-06 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, so this girl I know is doing a presentation at her Society & Culture class, and she chose to do it about asexual people. It's about the relationship between the media and the chosen social group. Well, she needs people to give statements, and she's having trouble finding them. I know that there are a few asexual people in meme. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if there's anyone who would be willing to record a video or at least a voice record of themselves answering a bunch of questions from her.

If you don't want to, you don't even have to give your e-mail or anything, I can drop the questions here and you upload the video/audio (though it would be ideal if you could in that case mention that you allow your image to be used, it's required for everything we do that includes another person's image).

If you're worried about this being seen by anyone you know, first you should know I'm in a non-English speaking country, probably far away from you. It's a presentation that'll only be seen by the other students and one teacher in a first semester class, and I'll tell her not to put any information online anywhere, which I don't think she intends to do anyway.

Just consider it. If you're willing to do it, but you don't want to leave your answer here, my e-mail is geleiademocoto@yahoo.com.br... Thanks for your time :)

I'm not asexual myself, so I can't help you by sending you a vid. But - if you haven't done this yet - you should try posting this request on the BBC Sherlock (kink) meme. Try the chatter post, link is here:
