There have been massive problems with fraud and errors in the parts of the US where they use voting machines. The machines can be hacked very easily, some of them use punch-out systems which are very inefficient and error-prone (see Florida in Bush's first election!)
In Canada, we mark an X on a pre-printed paper ballot with a serial number. The serial number is torn off before the ballot goes into the box, but the stubs with the serial numbers are kept so that the counts can be verified.
We usually have results within 2-3 hours of the polls closing in the last time zone. The system is efficient, reliable, and simple. No desire to switch to machines from this nonnie!
