Flashbacks

I was watching some CC interviews with Jeremy Carver and he keeps mentioning how important flashbacks are going to play this Season.

He seems to indicate that there will be so many flashbacks that it will almost alter the format of the show some. Carver said the flashbacks would showcase Sam and Dean's time apart.

So how is that going to work?

Specifically, how are the Sam flashbacks going to work? If Sam really got out of the hunting life, how much of his normal, everyday joe life can the writers really show us before it gets boring? I have no desire to see Sam living the that life for episode after episode, even in short flashbacks sequences. Yeah sure, an episode or two. But definitely not dragged out all season.

While Purgatory flashbacks definitely work and I am actually super excited to see them, I am just now worried about how the writers will balance the Dean and Sam flashbacks....when Dean's sound like they going to be 10x as interesting as Sam's.

Jared said at some point that it wasn't going to be a Sam-heavy season because they would be spending a lot of time on Dean's purgatory stuff. So maybe they aren't going to try to balance it out, and there just won't be that many Sam flashbacks.

OTOH, maybe this means that there is more to Sam's year than applying tick repellant to the dog.

I called it last season, heh. I still think Jared is on his way out and this is the trial if the Cas'n'Dean, or Dean and somebody else, show will work.

It was evident last season that Sam's role was reduced. He felt very passive throughout the season, mostly reations to Dean and Bobby's plights. And his hell story was done in 3 eps and that was his main arc.

This season seems even thinner arc-wise since Dean has the Purgatory based storyline, aka the mythology.
If there's a season 9, there will be no Sam. I bet my fat ass on this one. Sam is soon to be history and if CW survives, somebody else will take his place.

I'll be in the corner, leering when it's announced that Jared is not returning for season 9.

I doubt they're even going to show many of Sam's flashbacks. Jared said it wasn't going to be a Sam-heavy season. Welcome to S4-redux.

You know, I do think s7 tilted Samwards, if only because Sam's arc had a little more shape than Dean's and because he got a few really intense episodes. But it's not like it was Dean-lite; there was a LOT of time on Dean's emotional stuff, they just failed at giving it direction and its most intense eps, like the Osiris one, weren't as good.

They really don't need to backburner Sam this year because Singer thinks he got too big a share last year. Especially since s7 was no more Sam-tilted than s6 was Dean-tilted.

Ugh.

Episodes that are Sam-heavy or Dean-heavy work.

Seasons that are Sam-heavy or Dean-heavy definitely don't work. I'm not talking about the season being Sam or Dean focused. But "not Sam-heavy" implies Sam won't be on camera as much.

I don't want any season to be Sam-lite or Dean-lite. The show doesn't work that way.

Dean's sound like they going to be 10x as interesting as Sam's.

Seriously. I have a feeling Sam's will come across more like filler than anything, just something they throw in to somewhat balance out all the Dean stuff.

I'm not a fan of flashback storytelling anyway, so this whole prospect isn't very appealing to me. The only time I usually like them is when they go preseries to a show to give us new background, and even then I like it used sparsely.

And then the flashback storytelling mixed with new personality!Sam and !Dean and I just...augh. Its like all the things I liked least about S6 and S4.

Re: Flashbacks

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly? This sounds like half the season is going to be a re-hash of 5.3. You have Sam off having a normal life with a job and a girl (minus the hunters with demon blood, we hope) and Dean (and Cas) off in purgatory doing their thing. They are pretty much guaranteeing us that a good part of the season is going to be Sam and Dean apart, even if it is only in flashback.

So, no, I don't like it.

Re: Flashbacks

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean didn't have a supernatural story during the time Sam's Hell stuff was actively playing out, but they always managed to balance it out (and that was two seasons). I'm not too worried.

Re: Flashbacks

But that's Dean he is never not prominently featured and focused on no matter what. It's not the same with Sam.

I know this is crazy, but maybe, just maybe, there's more to thi season than what we've heard from the spoilers, and there's something interesting to show from Sam's view too.

Or maybe they don't really give us that many Purg flashbacks either, just a couple things like they did with Robo!Sam.

Bit more in this Jensen interview

-Sam's flashbacks will be happier and brighter; Dean's will be dark
-Jensen seems much happier as Dean-the-hunter than he did during press before S6 with domestic!Dean
-"smelling the roses" again--we need some roses now or I'll be disappointed

I wonder if Sam has any issues at all left. Apparently all he needed was for Dean to vanish so he could lose the few remaining shreds of trauma that escaped his vigorous mental health kick.

Here's another Jared interview and I find that it literally hurts me to watch his most of the time lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tz4QwYRV9gc

-he makes Sam seem quite happy about being able to "walk away feeling unencumbered by leaving his family"
-almost sounds like Sam is relieved that everyone is gone so he can get out (I hope this is just Jared being Jared)
-Sam is "weathered but not damaged, but he's happy"
-says they are going to "re-explore the Sam and Amelia love interest currently"
-he keeps reiterating that he's happy to play Sam happy, and Sam has never been happy (even with Jess) because his family was always out there

I hope it's not as bad as Jared makes it sound. He looks super hot though!

I do wonder if Jared really does see Sam resenting his family this much. I just don't think the version of Sam that seems to be in Jared's head matches the Sam that is in my head =\

I'm so glad the sudden disappearance of your brother gave you a chance to be happy. Most people would look for said missing sibling, but since you resent him just that much I guess he's better off fending for himself and making besties with monsters.

And to think S7 had me becoming a Sam girl. Never mind.

I wonder if it's character bleed at times. I mean, Jensen seems very protective of the brother relationship when he talks, and that is obviously very Dean. Jared, on the other hand, seems very much about independent!Sam (in it's different variations) and rarely talks much about the brother relationship. Maybe that comes from the way he sees Sam's mindspace, IDK

Re: Flashbacks

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Being determinedly pollyannaish: it's true that the idea that leaving hunting = abandoning family got drilled into Sam very early, and cemented by the Stanford fight, and that Dean's abandonment issues have sometimes reinforced the impressions left by John. I can see how there could be a kind of liberation from guilt in thinking that this time he could walk away and try something else and the act of doing so wouldn't be hurting anyone or leaving anyone. Sam's leaving has always been hurtful, and that in turn has been hurtful to Sam. I don't like the idea of Sam being that happy without Dean one little bit, but I can honestly see where the feeling might be coming from, and my experience with that kind of entanglement and disentanglement is that it's about how much you love the people involved, not about how little you love them.

Huh. I may possibly overidentify with this.

On another note, I still find it really hard to believe that Sam isn't damaged. Dude. Last nine/thirty/210 years ringing a bell?

They need to take away Jared's interview privileges.

Every interview of his that I listen to make me less and less excited for Season 8.

Jared says that gets how important the brother relationship is, but in these interviews he barely touches on it. Makes it out as if Sam is happier without Dean around. Jared hasn't even really mentioned whether Sam grieves over Dean anymore than he does over Kevin. It is almost like Sam is relived that no one (i.e. Dean) is left to keep him in the hunting world.

It's always Casis gone, Bobby is gone, Dean is gone, Kevin is gone. Dean just lumped in there.

What the hell Jared??
