I guess I'm just sad because out of all the directions they could have taken the characters, this seems like the least enjoyable (to me personally anyway, and it seems to a lot of others as well). The other spoilers from Carver make it seem like Sam isn't going to want to hunt even when Dean is back and then gets dragged into it for this quest thing. I mean, do we really need more Dean-resents-Sam-for-leaving-him and then having Sam resent him back for coercing him into hunting again? And then Dean possibly lying about Benny (aka his Ruby).

Unless there's a surprise in store that we don't know and changes everything, no, we didn't need this.

It's horrible. I'm torn between moving on and forgetting about SPN, and cling to the tiniest hope.

Well, I'm not saying it's a fic I'd want to write, just that it's one I can imagine writing! And I earnestly hope that if there is mutual resentment they will get past it and finally, finally discover that they can either be in the same life by choice or work out a way to be in different lives but also together and close, with no one trapped. And I could definitely do with a Winchester reunion without lying.

But, well. I think there is often some sense of relief and even sort of adventure that comes with some kinds of loss and grief, and that doesn't get talked about much because it sounds like such a devastatingly awful thing to acknowledge and like it would be negating the reality of love and mourning. And for someone like Sam, who's always had a need to go off on his own in conflict with very deep bonds, and who tends to dissociate and compartmentalize like crazy and has a kind of robustly fatalistic pragmatism, it could be very plausible for me. I doubt they'll write it or play it that way, but at least it gives me an available Sam's psychology headcanon.
