Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)I've been having trouble settling in and making connections, too, but I hadn't thought to connect that with BNFing. Can you expand a little, nonnie?
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)I have recced in this fandom. I made an entire spreadsheet of fics/art with number of comments because I refuse to rec things everyone has always read. In most cases, the BNF authors had about 50x more comments on EVERYTHING. I realize there are other factors in there, but that's ridiculous. A couple of non-BNF authors I followed in the early (2006-2008) years have moved onto other fandoms where they now get tons of praise.
Even for non-fic posts, BNFs will often get tons of comments whereas others in the fandom won't get any. I get the feeling people think if they comment on enough BNF posts they'll get noticed.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)Do you mind sharing whom you consider a BNF nowadays? I'm quite new to the fandom, too, so I missed lots of stuff going on in the earlier years and don't really have an overview of current things either, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)Some off the top of my head: fleshflutter, leonidaslion, lazy_daze, poor_choices (until she left fandom a little while ago), tryfanstone, dugindeep, mournthewicked, obstinatrix...a couple more.
Basically, I judge by who gets the "I ♥ ..."/"UGH, I hate..." in their FD threads and the ones who gets hundreds of individual comments on their fics within a week of being posted. I'd also like to be straight: I do not blame these authors or think their fic is necessarily overrated. In fact, some of these are awesome writers whose fic I always read and comment on.
But the obsessiveness of some fans is what I'm talking about. Seriously, people should not ONLY read BNF fic, which is what it seems like sometimes. Sometimes I read an amazing fic that has NO comments and I'm just appalled.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)BAH, I was actually AYRT. And I'm amused how different my list is from the one above. It probably depends on your ship.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)I just realized why the above list is so different. Um...yeah.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)Share with the class? I've never even heard of most of the people on the first list.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)I think they're the people from BB recently? IDK though. Ignore overly hostile anon, I don't see it as being stupid or wanky to ask for clarification here.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you haven't made the connection but basically anon was trolling with a list of people who are very much not bnf
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)I wondered, but I thought cherie_morte was pretty hot stuff, so then I was confused. Thanks for the clarification.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah idk with c_m, I've enjoyed some of her past stuff but I thought her BB this year was incredibly disappointing. I've seen nonnies describe her stuff as badfic (which the BB would fall under imo) but there is one fic of hers which is one of my favorites. I think maybe she's just not capable of being very versatile rn and that's why the quality of her writing varies.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I dunno. Most of what I've read of hers I'd consider idfic (including the bb), but that's not the same as badfic. I liked the bb until the end, so obviously we differ here, but regardless badfic can get soooooooo much worse than anything I've seen her write.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)Are either LL or FF still considered BNFs? They're not really active anymore. Occasionally one of them will post something but their hearts clearly aren't in SPN these days.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)I agree, BUT their names still come up to a ridiculous degree. I would have included c-b, but they never come up anymore. I continue to see FF and LL referenced.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)Really? They move on and went to different fandoms, why can't we move on too? There are many excellent writers that just get ignored.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)THAT'S MY ENTIRE POINT. If you read the thread that's what I was saying. They're allowed to move on. I WISH fandom would too.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)Yessss, recs would be awesome! Sometimes, when one is reading without a lot of spare time (or is relatively new to a fandom), one is less inclined to investigate a (comparatively) unknown quantity.

Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)I think fandom has, for the most part. Meme still bitches about BLoD and Fetters might be brought up in rec lists, but it's almost because it's comfortable at this point. Like a worn out shirt that's stretched and cozy.
I don't see either LL or FF discussed much anymore though, just in general. I don't follow a lot of general comms but I can't remember too many storyfinder posts for either of them.
Maybe it's just because there's not really been anyone new who has managed to take their places? There are lots of MMFs who hit specific niches but FF and LL both managed to attract huge swathes of fandom, Sam!girl and Dean!girl alike. Maybe not too many Cas!girls, though apparently a lot of Cas!girls ship J2 and FF was known almost more for that than her Sam/Dean, so.
I can't think of anyone else who's managed to have that sort of fame within fandom, but I also can't think of people who write the sort of long, epic fic that they did. People write long stuff but not with the same hook to their writing that snares the reader and keeps them dragged in chapter to chapter or if they do, it's only appealing to a very limited audience.
Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Are we really that bad?
(Anonymous) 2012-07-09 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)So what would you say are the causes of that? I mean, it seems like some degree of BNFing would be bound to happen in any fandom - that is, there'd be people who write better / produce fic more regularly / hit the fandom's kinks / come in knowing more people in the fandom / run all the things. I would expect people with a lot of those qualities to naturally end up with more readers and thus more comments on their fic.
Plus, this fandom is so big that it makes sense that the BNFs would be R(eally)BNFs.
So, as one of the people no one's heard of, I definitely get frustrated when I feel like a fic of mine is being ignored. But I guess I see that and BNFs as both being symptoms of a huge, sprawling fandom - which HP also was, obvs.
Am I way off base here? What do you think?
