They didn't give us anything really on the central relationship, so I admit I'm bummed and less enthusiastic than I was before.

--Dean's getting out of purgatory super fast, but he was down there at least a few months earth time (one source said "summer apart")

--Sam and Amelia obviously hook up while Dean is in purgatory, so you have him getting into a romance while Dean's off in purgatory dealing with horrible shit (last part per Edlund)

--concentration on the new relationships but nothing on the current relationships, re: Sam & Dean and them with Cas

--boys united but with "baggage" from their time apart, which sounds too much like S4 tension for my liking

Edlund: They are very much united in going after this one thing, notwithstanding the luggage they bring from their time apart.

So they are together and united on this overarching season quest thing re: the Word of God, but it sounds like there is tension from their time apart and these "new relationships." Both of those things give me S4 vibes and I'm not really enthused about it.

I don't know. I was worried upthread about S4 tension but this doesn't scream awful to me. The word united makes me happy and I'm looking forward to the exploration of new relationships. It might breathe some new life into their own relationship with each other.

Do we know this, though? I know Sam & Amelia meet while Dean is gone, but A) my impression is that Amelia will be a recurring character, B) Jensen was wearing Dean's wardrobe in some of those 'field of flowers' behing-the-scenes pics, which makes me think Dean's actually present there.

I'm wondering if the hook-up happens after Dean gets back.

No, according to the paparazzi that took those shots, Jensen showed up in the Dean-outfit to the location and then changed into the Jensen-outfit to direct the Amelia & Sam scenes. Dean wasn't in any of those scenes.

They keep talking about the relationships they formed while separated, so it's almost guaranteed that they hook up while Dean's in purgatory

according to Jared, Sam and Amelia are over by the time Dean gets back. That doesn't mean she wo't ever show up, but the quote seems to indicate that he primay "romance" is done before the boys reunite.

There doesn't seem to have been much info on where either of them are emotionally, either. Jared thinks there's nothing much left to explore with Sam -- that sounds exciting. Jensen isn't being reported as saying anything about Dean's issues at all.

I don't mind separation or the impact of new relationships (and I still don't get the horror at Sam becoming romantically involved while they're separated), but I want some confidence that the emotional arc stuff that was in place in the last few seasons is going to go on, that Dean is still affected by depression and drinking, that Sam is still coping with the impact of hell and mental illness.

At least it sounds as though they might be addressing their isolation and difficulty forming new relationships on an emotional level.

What I don't want (not saying this is going to happen) is a situation where Sam has made a new life for himself and is with Amelia, and then Dean comes back and he feels obligated to start hunting again. IDK, it's not the same as the Lisa storyline of course, but it feels similar.

It does feel like a parallel season again, like S4

I really hope they have soemthing different planned. The Lisa/Ben arc made sense, I didn't like it much, but I got it. But another 'I made a new family when you were gone, now what' arc would suck a bit... It's repetitive.
But with Sam's luck, the girl is probably John's demon possesing a STD-infected prostitute or something like that...

What the fuck. Where does this idea even come from? I doubt he walked out of Dick's lab and thought, "Well, Dean's gone. Better find a wife." I mean, it sounds like Dean will only be gone a couple months.

I doubt that that is the case. There haven't been any hints of settled Sam who has stopped hunting, just of Sam with a relationship. (Maybe I am too hopeful in thinking that the writers don't necessarily equate being in a relationship with "normal" settled life, but I don't really think his situation is meant to be parallel to Dean's with Lisa.)

I'm sure it'll be Amelia and her great loss comforting Sam and his great loss, blah blah lol. I just hope that Sam plays some sort of active role in trying to get Dean out of purgatory, and doesn't give up or shift gears like he did in S4.

That seems really unlikely. Dean is missing, not dead, plus there's all the remaining Leviathans to deal with, and Sam has shown no signs of wanting to get out of hunting recently. I would be VERY surprised if Sam is settled and out of hunting when the season opens.

Maybe in his distress at losing Dean he unfortunately falls into a river, and Amelia fishes him out, notices how well endowed he is, and dubcon marries him on the spot.

@emmaloggins: We're seeing flashblacks of Sam happy and having a normal relationship - Jared on the new season of #Supernatural

The juxtaposition of Sam being all happy and in love while Dean's struggling to survive won't bring any wank at all!

I'm so confused by the fact that the last words spoken to Sam were that now he was well and truly on his own, and the first thing they do is give him a normal relationship where he's happy.

Eh. We had montages of Dean being happy at Lisa's while Sam was in the Cage, and we survived. I'm more annoyed by Sam's ongoing perfect emotional health after everything than about his daring to be happy while Dean is gone.

Aaaaaand there's another mountain of ammo for people that hate Sam and don't believe he really loves Dean. I love Sam, but seriously, why do they give him the most self-absorbed reactions with these big separations? Why can't he ever pull an epic save? :(

While the lack of attention to their individual arcs doesn't surprise me considering the drop-off over S7, I'm honestly at a place now where I'm not all that interested in them not as a unit, and most certainly not in them becoming more independent and less isolated/emotionally entangled.

With how disappointing the show has been in dealing with their relationship lately, I don't see how adding more players to the mix is supposed to rejuvenate anything between them or do much of anything but give the writers something they're apparently more interested in to focus on. So, yeah, plenty of people, most of fandom probably, will be very happy to see this direction taken, but I guess I'm just severely out of luck.
