Family Remains is a really good example of his crappy handling of Sam.

I do too, but Sam isn't why I hate it. It's just a bad ep overall. I think they were trying to do the Dean version of Metamorphosis, but the overall effect was muddled and incomprehensive. I figure any writer can get one bad ep though and the rest of his have been very good.

You think The Rapture was good?

And Long Distance Call?

sa.

Excuse me-- "very good"?

I rewatched LDC recently and was surprised that I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. It's also the last time we ever get Dean significantly viewing John in a positive light, so that also forgives a lot of ills for me. Rapture? Eh, it's an interesting outside character study. I'm not a Novaks-nonnie, but it's at least as good to me as 4.21 and 4.22.

Just a random "Fuck yeah!" to "you actually think The Rapture was very good?" Consent manipulation, and the way that closer is actually further! I also liked LDC. Sorry? I'm not sure why I wouldn't.

What's so horrible about The Rapture? I have to think the issue is the subject matter, not shitty writing.

Long Distance Call I thought was so-so.

The Rapture was excellent. I don't like it, it's not the kind of thing my taste runs to, but it was a fine capstone to s4's gradual revelation of just how fucked up the deal with angels is. Almost everything that was interesting and powerful and horrifying about the vessels storyline is there, I just wish more had carried over into s5. We did get some glimpses of both the horror and the horrifyingness, in Lucifer with Nick in 5.1 and Sam in 5.3, in Raphael's vessel's fate (come to think of it, those two are both also Carver), but they could have done so much more with the blackmail, the sheer power, the obliviousness to human autonomy and concerns combined with the use of those things.

(I am still a bit bitter that all the Sam aftermath has been about the Cage and soullessness, not about vesseling Lucifer. Not only did resouled!Sam remember that part, for him in 6.12 it was the last thing he remembered, like it was yesterday, and they did nothing with that. /undying resentment)

Well, I hated the angels with a fiery burning passion. Still do. So I think an entire episode about them at the end of the season was awful. I thought the same thing in S6. I don't want a show about God and religion and prophets any more than I want a romance. I want my little weekly Horror/Roadtrip Show That Could.

But that has nothing to do with the individual quality of the episode. That's disliking the focus and subject matter.

I just thought the entire episode was just bad, bad, bad. Sam's sloppy characterization was just part of it. Was not impressed with that episode at all.

I think it's just laziness.

I don't think Carver really likes Sam at all. He tends to treat him and write him in a very sloppy manner to be honest.

Re: question about Sam and season 8.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-07 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't love Family Remains, but not because Sam's characterization was off. It had Sam concerned about Dean, aware of the distance between them, and clearly uneasy at not knowing how to approach Dean's hell trauma, which was pretty believable for mid-s4.

Also, that isn't a very specific example. What about the writing of Sam in Family Remains bothers you? Not that I think you are that nonnie, who I suspect may be trolling, but it's a lot easier to talk about stuff like "I don't think that Dean, who's always been protective to a fault, would let unicorn baby play outside in a tornado," than just saying that you think 9.4 is an example of how crappily its author writes Dean.

Re: question about Sam and season 8.

The fact that they didn't write him at all, but kept sending him offscreen-- like a bad dog they kept locking in a shed and ignoring. (And hey, Carver did the exact same thing in In the Beginning!)

I wonder how often they'll do it in S8. We should start taking bets.
