-Yes.
-Backup, I guess. I created it during the last LJ DDoS attacks, but I never set up crossposting and mostly forget it's even there.
-I have some of my fic at AO3, which I like better than DW.
-Sam!girl, multishipper.

I guess I still don't really get the purpose of DW, unless LJ never comes back. All my friends are on LJ, even the people who use DW still crosspost to LJ. If LJ dies forever, okay, DW would be a good alternate, but as a backup for fic, I think the setup at AO3 is tops. Like 99% of the time, DW feels redundant to me.

DW has expandable cut tags and employees and volunteers who actually respond to questions and concerns. Those are two of the things I like about it today. If it weren't for meme, I would spend no time on LJ at all.

ayrt. That's cool for you, but for those of who actually like posting and reading fic and participating in active communities, LJ is approximately five trillion times better. All the functionality in the world doesn't help when the place is practically dead, and what does show up here is mirrored onto LJ anyway.

Basically, LJ fucked us over in the past. And despite things seeming to be better now, it's one of those "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice..." things. DW is friendlier. When a censorship group reported that DW allows for potentially pornographic content to their payment processor (PayPal), they refused to delete said content, switched to somewhere that didn't require them to censor said content, and, in the meanwhile, took the financial loss.

I don't know much about the technical side of things, but they're actually developing the code (expandable cut-tags) and make available useful options (style=mine is a handy button for everyone, not only paid users). I prefer the circles/gives access to a million times over "friends" too. The people working on it are approachable and helpful and keep us informed.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to move (I kinda gave up on that, honestly) and I won't stop crossposting myself because the level of activity and interaction here is really low and I like comments on my fic just as much as anyone. But yeah, there are good reasons to like DW and if DDoS attacks on LJ are going to become a regular thing, that's one more.

ayrt. All that sounds really cool, but I'll be honest - it's not enough to make me pull up roots at LJ and move to DW. I'm here for the community factor, and the community is on LJ. If there got to be a critical mass of people at DW, I would definitely at least crosspost.

TBH I feel like DW is kind of being left in the dust by other platforms. I've seen a few people on my twitter feed join tumblr in the past few days so they can amuse themselves while LJ is down, but I haven't seen anyone say "I'm so bored, I'll join DW!" I even offered some DW codes and no one took me up on them.

I totally get it, honest. I've tried to move twice already, IJ and DW, and the community just doesn't follow - and it's just not fun to be talking all alone. I've had better success on DW compared to IJ and I can interact with the few people I talk fannish stuff with here, but if I want to read fic or meta, if I want to comment, if I want people to comment on my stuff, it's still LJ.

The kind of fannish stuff I'm interest in doesn't seem to be available on other platforms, but I pretty much agree that it would take LJ collapsing for people to move.

ayrt. Yeah, I'm with you on your second paragraph for sure - AFAICT, tumblr is just a bunch of gifs, and while gifs are okay, I'm kind of puzzled at the need for a whole platform to post them.

I am officially old, I guess, now that I don't understand what the young folk are up doing with their newfangled social networking thingies.

That's pretty much where I'm at too - images are pretty and all but I don't get the point, and twitter seems to be people saying random stuff about their days (or, alternatively, posting pictures of cats, apparently) and err, okay, but I don't feel the need to share the fact I did the dishes and I'm not particularly interested in other people's dishes either (pun semi-intended).

We can be old together, nonnie. *fistbump*

ayrt. Ha! I am a dedicated twitterer. It is pretty mundane, though, it's true. I totally know what music my friends are listening to right now!

Can we be old and curmudgeonly together, nonnies? *fucking tumblr, grumble, grumble*

I'd love to be active in DW, but it seems that there's nothing going on here at all. I went to look for a community to post some shit of mine, it was like there was all of one, and it hadn't been posted in for months. Where are people hiding in here? Are there active communities at all? And... WTF is an expandable cut tag after all? At this point, I'm just using DW to store my shit in case LJ dies.

I've been thinking about copying my stuff over, too, if LJ ever gets better. But then I'm also thinking that other nonnie was right about DW being left in the dust. Tumblr is actually starting to look fun to me, provided I can ignore all the 'wah wah, people hold different opinions from me and I don't understaaaaaaaand, I'ma spam all the main tags about it' bullshit.

And I'm wondering about twitter. I like the idea of being able to follow some of my favorite celebrities, but what's the fandom community like on there? Does fandom get discussed much or is it just fandom people talking about how their dog threw up on the couch and stuff?

I'm on twitter, and I have a lot of fun with it for fannish stuff. I use it pretty much as a chat client, and my fandom friends and I chat about fannish stuff and rl things pretty much all the time. I also like that there is a different mix of people on twitter versus LJ, so I have become twitter friends with people I didn't know at all or very well on LJ. Like, one person and I were flisties for about a year but I didn't know her very well because she doesn't use her LJ that often, but she uses twitter a lot, and now I would count her as one of my best friends in fandom.

[community profile] supernatural has some frequent users and you can post anything, IIRC, fic, meta, reviews, icons, caps, etc. Mind you, IDK if anyone is paying attention but it's still regularly used. It's a good place to start, I guess.

An expandable cut-tag is a feature that allows you to 'expand' the content behind a cut-tag without having to load the comments page. This way, you can read the hidden content directly on your reading-list by 'expanding' the cut-tag if you wish to do so.
