Okay, so you think you're just ~above that kind of reaction? Is that it? Because that's what I'm getting from you.

Yeah, there's gonna be over invested haters in every fandom, but some fandoms have a larger proportion of them than others, and some types of haters are much louder and more prolific than others.

I was a pretty heavy TWoP user back when it was still a fun place to be. I was also unfortunate enough to still be a regular there during S4, when it went from fun, to shithole like overnight. There was hate flying left and right at Sam, and anyone who dared to continue liking him despite all the ways the haters could list to prove that he was the most hideous character that ever existed. The heavily biased modding didn't help anything either. Sure, now I know that some of those people were, in fact, the same person, and I can see how the awful modding allowed things to spiral out of control. But at the time, that was my only fandom space, and to suddenly find myself and my opinions viewed as disgusting solely because it wasn't the popular opinion, was extremely upsetting. I withdrew from fandom then too, and now meme is my only fandom interaction other than my flist. If I, or the people who reacted in similar fashion were as over invested or crazy as you claim, wouldn't we instead be spamming fandom with batshit posts? Hanging out at extreme comms? You know, actually acting as crazy and ridiculous as you accuse us of being.

Nope, not above it, I just walk away. If it were RL I'd probably bitch-slap the haters.

I think it's a shame people have to leave fandom. But maybe it's because I took one look at TWOP and realized it was totally batshit so I didn't bother further with it. I'm pretty much a lurker in this fandom because yes, it seems more polarized than my other fandoms.

I find it interesting that a few batshits have so much power.

Okay, but your 'just walk away from it' reaction to the Sam hate you now admit that you've seen doesn't jive with your original statement that you didn't know where the fans who left could possibly have gotten the idea that fandom is full of Sam hate, or the implication that anyone who thinks that is overly sensitive. Maybe that original statement was too much of a simplification, and you're clarifying it now, but it seems more like you're contradicting it or backpedaling, which is confusing.

But when did you take your "one look" at TWoP? Because it didn't used to be totally batshit. It used to be fun. So if you're coming in now, or even in the last year and half to two years, and looking at it, then your reaction is understandable, and IMO, exactly right. But if you happened to have been an active member there when it WASN'T crazy, and were still active when the shift to crazy happened, it was really frustrating and confusing, and alienating the way it all went down. And quite frankly, leaving fandom was the only option I felt I had, since all of the public fandom spaces I knew of at the time were chock full of violent levels of hate for the character I liked best. Until I found other spaces that weren't so crazy, I had little choice.

I know one thing, SPN fandom has cured me of EVER getting involved in another fandom. This isn't my first fandom, but it will be my last. There's a lot of other shows out there that I like enough to be involved in their respective fandoms, if I wasn't gun shy that joining in would ruin the show for me. I don't know why the batshits in this fandom have so much power, but I would love nothing more than for the whole lot of them, from all sides, to KFO.

It's the full of I don't quite see, as stated in my original post.

I took one look at it in S4 because someone on my flist linked to a particularly nasty post. That was my one and only peek in that part of TWOP.

My bi-brotherly f-list is full of both understanding, and sometimes irritation with Sam. They wanted to shake Sam in S4 and Dean in S5 :) But no Dean-leaning, bi-brother f-lister has yet ditched show.

Now they are pretty much in heaven thanks to the brotherly bond being back.
I don't think I have any hater on my f-list because if I had, I'd kick them to the curb without explanation.

I'm sorry this fandom scared you off. *hugs gently*

One look isn't going to reveal much on the topic of quantity though, is it? A basic impression, sure, but one look doesn't seem a sufficient amount of info to make a judgment on whether something is full of a given thing or not. TWoP wasn't the only source of the hate anyway, it was other places. It just happened that TWoP was, to that point, my main and really only fandom space.

I think some Dean-leaning bi-bros at least threatened to leave after Swan Song. There was a lot of that sort of sentiment going around at that time, but it could have come from less bi-bro, more Dean only areas. I don't have any haters on my flist either, and I wouldn't tolerate them if they tried it, but that doesn't undo the damage that was done at the time.

Thanks nonnie *hugs*

I doubt the SS haters are very bi-bro since the ep was a declaration of love for the bros and Sam and Dean's bond was what saved the world. It was just Sam who was the executor of the saving but Dean had his very important part in it: his love for his little brother.

I'm sorry you had to start out on TWOP, I can see that would have scarred you! I was lured into show by f-listers who sang the show's and both brothers' praises.

In 2001.

Then you were looking at some totally different portion of TWoP, which was possibly, or even probably, populated by entirely different people than the SPN forums attracted? That's not a fair comparison to anything SPN related on that site.

Another ex-TWoPer here - I started watching in S4, and wasn't on LJ yet, so TWoP was pretty much my only contact with fandom. It was pretty upsetting, but I think it kind of cemented my Sam!girl status, because I tend to always root for the underdog, and the more he was hated there the more I loved him. But it was a pretty discouraging and unpleasant experience.

Then I discovered LJ, and things got much better.

So I guess it depends on what your fandom places are - some of them ARE full of hate for a particular character, and if that's your primary experience of fandom, it gives you a skewed view of how fans feel.
