I don't know, I'm not saying the system needs to change (although for what I read and see many Americans wish it would change) but I believe that if you complain and protest in the right way, if you make voice be heard something good could come out of it.

On the whole I agree that Gore was right to let the 2000 election rest where it did, but I am disturbed by the lack of widespread protest and action regarding blatant voter suppression. Though I'm as guilty of it as anyone else -- I haven't exactly taken to the streets. I guess maybe everyone else is as unsure as I am what to do about the issue if it isn't directly affecting our own region.

I think there was a lot of action regarding the voter suppression stuff; it just mostly came into play in future elections with people working hard to ensure it wouldn't happen again and/or ways to combat it if it did. All the hotlines now and back-up plans to report voter suppression that we have now, for example. All the education that's been done to teach people about their rights (such as requesting provisional ballots.) Or the fact that the Ohio early voting mess got straightened out before this election, are all due to people taking action.

It's hard to protest for places like Florida and Ohio when you're on the other coast, but you can try and get the word out to people that if someone tries to stop you from voting, then whip out your camera phone, take their picture and get their name. Document the shit out of it. That's probably the best way to fight it right now. Publicize it and let people in those states know to publicize it.

DA - one of the things which always strikes me as odd about the US electoral system is that each state sets its own rules for the elections, and has its own bureaucracy to administer it. And in many states it's not even the state that runs it, it's all these little county-level elected officials. There are no national standards, and the opportunities for incompetence, corruption, and partisan mismanagement are very high. I don't know how that could ever be fixed, but it's a hell of a way to run a country.
