Re: Is Dean becoming "gayer"?

I think Dean's primary form of connection to others right now is combat-based homosocial bonding. This is neither particularly gay nor particularly surprising for someone in his circumstance.

In fact, I'd argue, like some of the nonnies above, that Dean's primary bonds have always been homosocial, starting with the family unit of himself, John, and Sam, and adding Bobby, Castiel, and now Benny. In the past, he tended to supplement that with casual sexual relationships with women, but he's doing that less now, whether that's because he's older and less interested in casual sex (and feels like he is unable to have more serious relationships with women, because of the Lisa fiasco) or lowered sex drive due to depression and PTSD, or some combination of the two.

The there have been a few exceptions, like his romantic relationship with Lisa, or some form of combat-bonding with Ellen & Jo, and Anna. But those are fairly rare. It's one of the reasons I really wish Benny had been one of the female monsters they've killed: I think it would have been very interesting to see Dean forming that kind of friendship with a woman, particularly one he wasn't sleeping with.

I don't think the writers yet realize women who aren't mother-figures and yet don't feel intrinsically compelled to jump on either Sam or Dean's dick can exist in their universe, especially in a friendly, long-term connection capacity. Jo was probably the closest they ever got to that.

Which is sad, because some of my favorite relationships on TV right now are m/f bromances. (Emily/Nolan on Revenge, Joan/Sherlock on Elementary, Luther/Alice on Luther...) I wish more shows would hop on that train.

But this fandom has always been more welcoming to slash fodder than giving women a chance, so the writers are probably just going for what they know will be accepted. Giving both Sam and Dean significant new women in their lives at once probably would not be.

M+F bromance is my favorite and I want it all the time in every show. (I watch two of the shows you mention, and I was bored by Revenge, but I recently wavered and thought about picking it up again when I heard some appealing things about Emily and Nolan's relationship. XD) This is probably because it's reflective of most of my close friendships.

I have some hope for Charlie. The way Singer explicitly presents her as being gay because it makes her not a romantic "threat" is infuriating and gross, but if the end result is a female character who interacts platonically with Sam and Dean and maybe brofists them from time to time, with neither sexual tension nor mothering, I'll take it.

Me too. I'm still not entirely over Mulder/Scully.

Uuuugh Mulder/Scully. That's like my parents having sex. SOME THINGS ARE JUST WRONG.

That's a surprisingly good analogy! After a certain while, I‘m forced to admit it's canon. But that doesn't mean I, like, ship it.

Ahaha, you're the first person who's ever acknowledged the objective perfection of this analogy! Most people take it very literally, like, obviously your parents have had sex, dude, what are you talking about? But you got it exactly: of course it's happened, but for the love of God don't bring it up at the dinner table.
