Doing it all again
(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)Also, several months ago, maybe even over a year, there was a really fun AU time travel thread that I was involved. In it, Anna succeeded in preventing Sam from being born and somehow S5!Sam ended up in 1983. Since baby!Sam wasn't around, YED used Dean instead and since he was four, there was no baby monitor to wake Mary up and send her to check on him, so she lived. It was an awesome thread, really long and we plotted out this fantastic story with John thinking that Mary was trying to hurt Dean (she was just trying to test him for demonic influence, iirc) and so he took Dean and ran, and Mary teamed up with S5!Sam to find them and Meg and YED were involved and it was just a whole lot of fun.
Do any of the tracking nonnies possibly have a link to it? I'd love to read it over again. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)For that matter, how different would Sam and Dean be? They would have been raised in the "normal" home life that we've seen both Sam and Dean crave. Would Sam still have the urge to strike out on his own? I always figured a part of his craving of a normal life was to differentiate himself from John and Dean; would we get Sam running off as soon as he graduates high school to be a hunter to differentiate himself from his "normal" family, while Dean stayed behind to take care of John and the family business - in this case, a garage? Would Sam have even waited to graduate to run away?
And what would their home life have been like, anyway? Would John have fallen into drink because he didn't even have his quest of vengeance to keep it together? Or would he have managed to pull himself up for the sake of his sons? And if John wasn't a hunter, there wouldn't have been an Adam and so Dean really would have been the only choice for Michael, unless they resurrected John.
It could have a lot of neat possibilities!
Re: Doing it all again
(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)Would Sam even have had the drive to prove himself academically if he could settle into the wider society of a regular school more easily? He's smart and capable, yes, so he'd probably have pretty decent grades without trying too hard, but if he's not always the New Kid, if he had a regular circle of friends, would he have found other ways to satisfy himself? He might not have needed to differentiate himself from his family like that; the willpower might have gone in a different direction.
And perhaps Dean would have done better at school without the very focus-pulling hunting, if his inventiveness and charm had a different outlet.
Or, as you say, perhaps John fell apart after Mary's death and they have a life more like the the first kid with powers they meet.
Re: Doing it all again
(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)I could see Dean throwing himself into school and being determined to be the absolute best he could be at that, because Dean's a perfectionist - it's just that in canon, what the family valued was hunting, and so Dean strove to be perfect at that. In the absence of hunting, would Dean strive to be the best at a "normal" life? Would he be all about his studies or sports? Or would he still shun those things, because what did he need them for anyway, he was going to work at the garage with his dad?
I think with Sam, it would depend on how Dean broke. If Dean went for academics, I don't think Sam would. If Dean played his canon role of "bad boy" teenager, I think Sam would totally try to differentiate himself with his studies.
Maybe he would have been more materialistically concerned? Class issues might have come up more? In this hypothetical situation, that's the biggest factor that I could see that would keep the Winchesters from being "normal" (and I say this, btw, as someone who grew up dirt poor myself) - instead of being the kid who moves around and wears hand-me-downs that never seem to fit properly, Sam would be the kid of the town drunk who still wears hand-me-downs that never seem to fit properly. Maybe his desperation to break away would mean he never drank and was determined to be successful.
Only I really, really love the idea of Sam growing up and running off to be a hunter. Like, I love this concept. So I'm going with the idea that Dean was very capable academically while Sam eventually fell into the hunting lifestyle because all his life, he'd craved something more than his quiet, suburban life.
So how does the pilot work, then? Does YED kill John in the opening episode, and that's what spurs Sam and Dean to go off and find him?

Also, has it been that long? Wow!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 03:15 am (UTC)(link)It's been over three years for me - I've been involved with SPN anon memes since post 1 of Spermy's meme. D:
Re: Doing it all again
(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 01:59 am (UTC)(link)I could try reposting it for you, but it's a long thread and the threading would get confusing. Maybe this could be a project when I'm up late one night and won't be bothering other nonnies? But yes, it's been that long! I was surprised, too. I thought for sure that had been here at anonhaven.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 03:14 am (UTC)(link)Oh, I'd hate for you to have to go through all that trouble! Um. Maybe there's a way to upload all of the posts as a single document that could just be linked to meme? D:
