I have no faith that they will actually give a better explanation, just evade and vague it up some more. They are handing the ESH everything they want on a platter.

Well, they must be evading to some extent, since Jensen has said that as of 8.8 we still knew some of WHAT Sam had done but not WHY, and that in his opinion there needed to be some big reveal down the line.

Not that that means we're getting a big reveal, since I don't think the writers necessarily agree with Jensen that the point is inadequately explained, but it doesn't sound like we're getting a clearing of the air and moving on in the fictional realm between Sam and Dean, regardless of how the audience might judge its adequacy.

YES actually we DO know WHY. We've known why since episode 8.01 the first 15 minutes I believe.

I don't mind conflict between Sam and Dean. I welcome it. The "you dont love me as much as I love you" type of conflict? I thought we were done with that at the end of S5. Kinda the whole point of the end of S5 actually.

Well, not really. We know that Sam says he thought Dean was dead. We don't know how he got to that conclusion from 7.23, whether it was a matter of evidence or a psychological collapse into despair. Moreover, 8.1 also gives us the "I had no one to call" explanation, which isn't really consistent with the thinking Dean was dead explanation. And the direct question of whether Sam looked Sam doesn't answer.

I don't think Jensen (and others) are off the mark in seeing a major motivational blank space there.

It's still not clear if Sam really thought Dean was dead, and if so, why, since there was no body or body parts or blood left behind. Sam's non-answer to "Did you look for me?" might mean that he didn't and didn't want to say so, or it might mean something else.
