I'm going to start a degree in mathematics and its teaching in October. In the meantime, I am doing a maths refresher course to see just how much I have forgotten in the 274 years I've have been out of formal education. My first assignment has been marked and it is sitting here beside the keyboard and I am too scared to look at it.

And apart from you meme, no one knows about my plans.

Ooh, congrats on starting a degree, nonnie! What stuff is covered in the refresher course? (I teach math and am nosy.)

It's nothing too major, general mucking about with fractions, percentages and decimals and then being able to convert one to another. Converting numbers to and from Standard form, hardly any algebra, which is a surprise. A bit of geometry, word formulae, that sort of thing.

What I really found hard was the practical uses of maths, like working out how many rolls of wallpaper I would need to paper a room.

I had to give the ins and outs of a duck's behind - when all I wanted to do was work it out in my head - writing down each flipping step of my calculation, it was like pulling teeth.

I still haven't looked at the assignment, I can fee a battle of wills coming on here.

Thanks nonnie, I'm feeling far more confident about that than I am the CELTA course I have also signed myself up for.

God in heaven, what the hell was I thinking there? I can barely communicate in the written form of English, let alone foist myself on some poor, unsuspecting student of it.

Ah well, with all the flaming money I am shelling out on books, I expect to at least be able to punctuate my sentences properly by next May.

Very cool! Good luck nonnie. I'm starting a teaching degree this september too. I've taught math before, but to kids. On the 10-13 age range. Discipline was what I found was the most important, lol. It was a bit of an eye opening experience.

And good luck to you too. I plan to teach our secondary school age (11 to 16, but that is a long way off yet. I'll to start panicking about that, next week.

ahah no panic! :) Although I'm kind of very anxious of going back to school again, too.

I'm doing the degree that allows to teach last year of highschool chemistry. The one I have now only allows to teach 5th and 6th grade math and science. If you don't mind me knowing who you are, we could follow each other on twitter or something and talk about how things are going when school starts? It's fine if you'd rather not, though.

And before school starts too! I've also been re-reading chemistry textbooks to prepare, we could encourage each other on the revising? :) lol sorry if I'm sounding too desperate here.
