SA as above - I'm pretty sure that no-one but Jared had this idea when they shot the Pilot, but he must have discussed it later, and they flirted a little with the idea in the AU of WIAWSNB.

IDK if they got that idea from Jared. I've watched the commentary for that ep and Kripke mostly seems amused at making Dean as pathetic a low-life as possible, because he thought it was funny. He said the only reason Dean got to be with Carmen was because it was pointed out to him that there was absolutely no reason why Dean would want to stay there.

I mean, it's possible they got that idea from Jared. Who knows who came up with it? But it still is one I really can't stand.

The Sam and Dean of WIAWSNB had a totally different relationship than canon Sam and Dean though. It made more sense that two brothers who didn't get along and were much more distant to have this backstory. From what we know of canon Sam and Dean they were very close and Dean saw himself as Sam's caretaker/protector. Also this isn't The Vampire Diaries. Sam and Dean fighting over a girl would just cheapen their relationship. I dread such a storyline ever happening on the show outside of a one off AU ep.

Seriously. That Dean was this small petty crook who had no redeeming qualities at all. IDK why Carmen was with him to begin with since it apparently wouldn't have been out of character for him to steal his own mother's silver to pay off a bookie and he kept porn in his trunk.

But I think the anon who brought up that the original version of Dean was a douche may have it right here. Dean became much more sympathetic in later iterations than he was in the original drafts. IDK when Jared came up with this story, I'm guessing it was around the time they were shooting the pilot, but I hope it's one he moved past early on. I'm kind of surprised they didn't tell the Js what had caused the split before shooting though; it's not like it was a big mystery in S1, the truth was out very quickly.

Didn't Jared do this kind of storyline on Gilmore Girls? Jess/Rory/Dean triangle. I guess just coming off of that show he would think of backstory like that for the Pilot lol.
