See, I hate this made up backstory. First of all, when you boil it down to fighting about some girl, you take away from the very valid reasons that Sam had to leave. It takes away any thoughts about craving normalcy (or the illusion of it) or the fact that John told him choose between going to college or his family. And then you make Dean just some asshole, who not only wrongs his brother, but then physically assaults him for being upset about it. At the same time, it takes away from Dean's feelings about it, and turns it into something sordid instead of very real feelings of abandonment and the fact that Dean's entire self-worth was built around hunting and what that was supposed to mean for his family unit.

IDK, his backstory cheapens the emotional pull for me, personally

I didn't take this as something he believed was canon, but something Jared came up with in the beginning to maybe kind of give him a more relatable way to portray his character as feeling distanced from Dean's, if that makes sense? Though it seems a little extreme to me--it puts Sam's grudge directly against Dean when canonically it was about John (except in WIAWSNB 'verse), and we knew that right away.

Though I suppose Sam might have felt a little grudgey against Dean for not standing up for his choice that night.

Honestly, I think canon provides all the backstory necessary to "explain" the characters in that episode and those scenes, so that I'm kind of confused why Jared even found this necessary at all. But it's a neat story to hear.

Though I suppose Sam might have felt a little grudgey against Dean for not standing up for his choice that night.

I think there were hints of that in Bugs, where the skirmish where Dean was standing up for John insisting on bow practice rather than soccer was associated with Dean objecting to Sam encouraging the kid to got to college and saying that the kid shouldn't leave his family. Sam, and for that matter Dean himself, hadn't figured out yet how complex Dean's stance on the John party line was at that point. and I think Sam probably saw Dean as on John's side much more thoroughly than Dean's much more mixed actual feelings about it, especially at the beginning, when Dean in the Pilot was also reiterating that Sam had walked out on family who needed him. It wasn't until Scarecrow that they really untangled some of that fight.

They were even still dealing with it in the heaven episode, and I think there was a real disconnect there between them that I think they finally figured out (of course who knows what they are doing this season)

DEAN: C’mon! Your heaven is somebody else’s Thanksgiving. Okay. It’s bailing on your family. What do you want me to say?

SAM: Man, I never got the crusts cut off my PB & J. I just don’t look at family the way you do.

DEAN: Yeah, but I’m your family…

SAM: I know…

DEAN: I mean, we’re supposed to be a team. It’s supposed to be you and me against the world, right?

SAM: Dean, it is!

DEAN: (after a pause) Is it?

DA Canon does, and I think it's a better story. But it didn't provide it until later. This was what Jared had in his mind as his motivation for the scene, because he hadn't been given all the information yet.

IDK, I mean. I don't disagree that the canon version is better, but everything is set up there in the Pilot. Sam doesn't express irritation with Dean really, he puts everything in a John-centric context. "I was just going to college. It was Dad who said if I was gonna go I should stay gone. And that's what I'm doing."

Pretty sure he's talking about using for why Sam didn't call Dean for two years and not why Sam left in the first place.

Same, on about every level and thank you for explaining it so well. I can't think of any backstory I'd like less, unless it came out that John used to molest Sam and Dean was perfectly okay with it or helped. It lessens the impact of Sam's departure and turns it into something all about some nameless unknown girl. I can't ever picture Dean slugging Sam because Sam called him a jerk either. Bitch/jerk would play out a lot differently if it pissed Dean off that much.

Jared coming up with his own backstory is fine and actors do that often but there's not many he could have picked that would bother me more. That one makes my skin crawl.
