DA - Yes, exactly. This was all over the Ben storyline as well - Dean falling into his father's patterns of parenting and feeling like a fuckup and getting angry at himself and the situation. It seems very real and honest, actually.

I really hope they've got some reasoning like this behind the Sam-spoilers. *hopes rises slightly*

IAWTC. And despite all of the gnashing of teeth here, I fully expect the Sam story to not be "Sam shrugged his shoulders and took up rose gardening." I mean, c'mon guys.

It would actually make me very happy if Sam took up rose gardening. I'd like to see his obsessive tendencies in a non-hunting context, and one of the things that bothers me about Spn's treatment of "normal" life is that it tends to be so generic. Maybe some people don't have BBQs, maybe they, I don't know, micro brew. We never got any specific, concrete stuff like that on Dean at Lisa's. Having Sam doing something non-hunting that is very specific and idiosyncratic rather than dating, job, relationship would give the story a lot more depth.

/not really a useful response to your comment, but

YOU CAUGHT ME OUT, I can totally see Sam rose gardening. He'd be obsessive and meticulous about it. PRUNING THE BUSHES.

MY POINT STILL STANDS.

a lot more depth

Well, not really. It's be good bc they'd be paying attention to details, but would not add much more depth to the story.

It adds depth if it's something individual, rather than something that comes from an obvious list of trappings of "normal" American domestic life. If it's something where you start thinking about how, yes, rose-gardening Sam is a recognizable version of characteristics of Sam we saw hunting, that deepens the story. It's not just fleshing out detail, it's doing character or commentary or symbol or whatever with them.
