But the problem is that he even admits it himself that they've used it too many times. And they pushed the idea during CC that these relationships that they had separate from one another during this year and somehow changed them for the better and that they are more upfront with each other.

Also, this is the 8th season--don't these guys ever get to learn any lessons? If they want us to think that these guys are not the same guys they were back when John Winchester was around, then maybe they shouldn't fall back on analysis like this just to justify the fact that they are lazy and can't thing of any other way to create tension besides "they lie to each other"

I don't know, since they're reverting Sam to the guy that wanted to walk away from hunting and have a nice life, I guess they can revert everything else about them?

I don't like the general spoilers, and I admit lies used as plot devices are overused, but liars don't usually stop. That's their way of life, no matter what. ta least the ones I've met. So I don't think they're learn their lessons.

I think part of my issue is that it feels again like they are disregarding all the characterization of the past two seasons. Just like we talked about how the Sam of "Time After Time" wouldn't be likely to just give up on his brother, you also have Dean in "The Mentalists" saying this:

"Maybe it's 'cause I don't like lying to you. You know, it doesn't feel right. So, yeah, you got me there. I been climbing the walls."

I mean, I think that throughout all their faults (and there are many), that they have grown as people in the past few years. And to say that they can never grow out of this cycle of deception and mistrust just because of their father does them a great disservice, IMO

Yeah, I know. I actually wish they could be consistent and coherent for once. I have the impression seasons 6-7 just don't exist for the showrunners this season.

Well, since Carver said he inherited a "hot mess", that's quite obvious. It's just so frustrating because I feel like they are only giving us the bad parts of their old characterization, and just ignoring everything they learned about each other in the meantime. And again, how many different ways can they play resentment?

I dunno, I grew up in a very dysfunctional family and those patterns are hella hard to change. Yeah, you repeat shit you know better than to repeat, and its just that it's REALLY HARD not to fall into those patterns when that's the way you grew up, the way you were wired. It's like being asked to think about breathing, all the time.

This isn't recycling because they don't have any ideas. It's how things are in dysfunctional families.
