What are the parallels between Sam/Dean and Thor/Loki?

After those spoilers I really want to start dabbling in other ships/fandoms and this one seems like the ship du jour.

So other than the obviously sibling angle, are there any similarities between the two pairings? I love S/D so much but the show and my f-list's loss of interest are really bringing me down, so dipping my toes into a similar ship seems like the thing to do.

They have some very basic similarities but overall are really two completely separate pairings. They've both got fraught fraternal relationships where the older, more in line with the family goals brother is desperate to save the younger, at odds with the family one, but that's where it ends.

Loki isn't Sam and Thor isn't Dean. They don't have the same background, they don't have the same dynamic. While both Loki and Sam are cast in the ~darker~ role, Sam isn't there by choice and is determined to subvert it while Loki seems to try to do that in the first movie (if in a really horrible way that Sam would never have gone for) but appears to all out embrace it by the Avengers. Sam and Loki don't react in similar ways, nor do Thor and Dean.

In fanfic, there's more similarities. People write in a much more affectionate and protective bond than what we got in canon. Loki is very much a woobie, however, so be warned of that if it isn't your thing.

Heh, yes. Also, size difference. I guess I forgot about that because my kink is for the younger sibling to be the bigger, toppier one just in general. Not that it much matters, because Thor and Loki really don't have an older brother/younger brother dynamic. (Actually, do we know which one really is older?)

Not really, I don't think... Odin refers to Thor as his firstborn, but there's no sense of how old Thor was exactly when Odin found Loki. If Thor was born sometime during the war with Jotunheim, and Loki would be around the same age.

Thor is older, but not sure by how much (a day, a year, a hundred years?). Loki is, at least, 1000 years old for the MCU timeline.

They're awesome, but they're not Wincesty. There's no sense of them having only had each other growing up (although there is sense of a strong bond, at least from Thor's side), there's no ridiculous level of protectiveness or sacrifice for one another (they seem to trust each other in battle in the beginning, and Thor will verbally defend Loki to a point, but he has limits), and Loki is full-on villain where Sam only got as far as being kind of beige. Plus, Loki's not only adopted, but of a different species than his family, and not a friendly species either, whereas Sam's cause for feelings of alienation isn't quite of that flavor.

So... Thorki's a lot more one-sided (Thor loves Loki, Loki loves Thor but also thinks he's an idiot, is jealous of him, and mostly wants him out of his way... killing him is an acceptable option, if it comes to that), but there's also lots of tearful pleas for reconciliation, lots of bitterness and hurt feelings, and a sense that if they could just kind of talk to each other the right way, connect the right way, Thor might be able to get Loki back. Loki is deliciously sassy, Thor is admirable and darling, and they're both badass as hell. I highly recommend at least watching the movies... their scenes are the awesomest thing about The Avengers, imo. I don't know what the fandom output is like, though.

HAWT. Gosh, I love these crazy Asgardian assholes.

(Journey into Mystery is ending soon. I weep, I tell you. If the rare unabashed Thor'n'Loki love is wiped out after this book is over, I will be so, so bitter.)
