He said that the bone had a kick. He didn't exactly spell it out, but you'd think that purgatory would be among the top options. And certainly the fact that Sam was asking where Dean and Cas were doesn't suggest he thought they were dead -- as of 7.23, he clearly thought they had vanished elsewhere.

Not looking for Dean at all really makes absolutely zero sense in the setup the finale left. Zero.

This would (sadly) not be the first time that they completely threw out in the season premiere what the previous season had set up.

It bothers me more when it's character stuff radically altering than when it's magic plane detox or the evaporation of Godstiel. I hate that those things were truncated, but what happened wasn't inconsistent with the finales, it was just a frustrating underdevelopment. With this I just can't see how to get here from there.

All three of those examples annoy me to equal amounts, but they're all character related to me and feel like complete asspulls. The only reason it happens is because someone said "and then it happened!" It's bad writing across the board.

Unrelated, but like when Sam and Cas were suddenly friends.

Cas said 'Sam's my friend!' and then they were friends. But never before that was there ever any indication that they had the kind of relationship.
