Yeah. On the one hand, I do think that if the positions were reversed, if Sam had vanished into purgatory and came back and found that Dean had been able to let it go, walk away, and be happy, Sam would probably not be either hurt or resentful (assuming I can still assume anything at all about Sam's characterization at this point). But that's neither here nor there. Sam doesn't have the same insecurities, issues, history, and temperament Dean has. There's no way this isn't going to hit Dean where he's vulnerable. Which is yet another DNW -- I really didn't need brand new blows to Dean's self-worth, especially not specifically in relation to Sam.

I dunno, from spoilers it sounds like we're getting a brand new Dean who's got purpose in life! and goals! and sounds nothing like the guy they've been building up for years, so those issues will all probably evaporate too. Ugh, this is what I hated most about the beginning of S6: when the characters came back unrecognizable to me I just found it so hard to feel for them, and now they expect me to wait throughout the entire season to see flashbacks that will only possibly eventually give me some explanation as to why I'm supposed to care about these nu!Winchesters?

This is a horrible idea. Maybe if it was only a 2 hour movie being made, but seasons span nearly an entire year.

Ugh. I could forgive the S6 thing since Dean's healing was clearly thanks to his time with Lisa and Ben and since it was obvious early on that Sam wasn't himself. (Really early on. Like, last scene of Swan Song early on.)

This one bothers me more, at least for Dean, because I really dislike the idea that all Dean needed to get over his issues was more life-draining suckage. Just have him be tortured a bit more, that'll make him better! That'll give him new purpose in life! :D

Hey, it worked for Sam. 180 years in the cage and apart from pesky but removable hallucinations he came out the very model of mental and emotional health.

And what's also great: as well as suddenly healthy!Sam and suddenly better!Dean, it sounds like Cas brushes off that absorbed debilitating hellcrazy rather conveniently.

Continuity and conviction in storytelling, where art thou? :(

Yeah, that's something that this season is lacking going into it that at least S4 and S6 both had: previous seasons' buildup to give us framework for how those situations might affect the brothers during their separation. In S3 we saw foreshadowing of Deanless Sam's desperation and darkness that would come to be, in S5 they took time to tell us what Sam wanted for Dean after he was gone so we understood why Dean tried to live a normal life. But S7 was so weak for both characters--at the end especially--that this really feels like starting from scratch, or at least that it requires guesswork to figure out where these guys suddenly are in their lives, and I don't know how to relate to that. :/
