LOVE THAT SCENE. I don't know what I believe about pre-movie Thorki... there was obviously a lot of tension, but I think there must have been a lot of love and reliance on each other (that deleted bit where Thor's trying to convince the Warriors Three and Sif to go to Jotunheim and he's all, "You're not gonna leave all the glory to my brother and me?" and Loki's all "What?" and Thor's all "What?" and Loki's all "..." and Thor's like "YOU'RE GOING WITH ME AREN'T YOU?!! D: D: D:"), or they wouldn't be where they are now. I don't think Loki's hated Thor all his life or anything... just resented the "know your place, brother!" attitude. It was the adoption reveal that seems to have sent him over the edge, even though he clearly thought Thor was going to be an insufferable king. (Although even the adoption reveal... the final cut of the movie makes it look like he seized power after Odin went into the Odinsleep, but the deleted scenes make it clear that he didn't... it was something he was asked to do, that he wasn't sure about at first. So that adds another layer either to the masks he was putting on, or to his progression into full-on usurpation and genocidal rage.)

I think Thor's absolutely right to think that he can get Loki back from his crazy, but I think Loki's head is waaaay more twisty than Thor has expected up til now. If they'd managed to keep him in Asgard after the first crazed usurpation-genocide combo, I bet it would've been a lot easier to drag him back from the edge, but he's full-on delusional now.

On another note, my sister brought up an interesting theory, which is that Loki's endgame in The Avengers was never actually to rule Earth, but to get back to Asgard. From Coulson's "You lack conviction" to his general lack of a plan beyond "cause lots of chaos" to his pretty much open fear of the guy pulling his strings, it seems like he was in over his head. Possibly he fell so far after the first movie that even his magic couldn't get him back. So he found a patron who could get him back to Earth, made some trouble, and got Thor come for him and transport him safely back to the place he really wants to rule... home sweet home. Which brings up some interesting possibilities for Thor 2, if it turns out to be the case.

Either way, I'm hoping the endgame is for Thorki reconciliation. JiM has been a balm to my soul (so sad it's ending in the fall!). :)
