Totally agreed. Especially Sam. He's always wanted normal.

There's kind of a lot of canon that complicates, if not contradicts, that simplistic vision of Sam. Not saying that Sam might not still find his way to settling down and having that version of a family, but it's actually been more strongly associated with Dean in the later seasons than with Sam.

A lot of this discussion seems weirdly disengaged from Sam and Dean as we've seen them develop through canon. You could argue that Sam's disaffection with 'normal' life in Swap Meat was sour grapes, or that his acceptance of the 'freak' side of his nature in 7.3 was unhealthy resignation, or that the fact that he's taken on the role that Dean tended to have in s1 of speaking for the worth of hunting as a way of helping people, but just sweepingly saying "Sam's always wanted normal" without qualification or discussion looks like not grappling with much of the show.

If it turns out to be something he wants and thinks he can have again, that's great, but I haven't seen evidence of that mindset from him (with more to the contrary) in a really long time and don't think just because it's something he wanted 5+ years ago, it's automatically still something he wants now.

I think people are putting their "normal" curtainfic onto the guys at this point, and ignoring the past 7 years of character development.

I personally don't think there is ANY way that this show (especially if Kripke has a say in the finale at all) will end with the guys settled down with kids and wives. It's going to be death together or driving off to hunt together (as it should be). I would be totally content with a cliche, "we've got work to do" ending
