Anonymity

(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else read this http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/27/randi-zuckerberg-anonymity-online_n_910892.html?

The marketing director of Facebook is saying that online anonymity should be ended, and everyone should have to put their real names on everything they do online.

While I can see that there are some arguments for that position, personally some of my very favourite online experiences have been on meme. And even off meme, my regular LJ is under a pseudonym which I keep quite separate from my real name. I hate the idea that we shouldn't be free to reinvent ourselves, for all kinds of reasons, in virtual space.

What do you think, memesters?

I thought you were the one who posted all the comments!

YANA. I commented on about 25 fills before the outage, and had Monday off and a bunch of tabs open to read (and comment on if I liked the fills at all) that day. Number of comments successfully posted Monday: none.

Tuesday my browser crashed, so open tabs I was still hoping to leave a comment on during the extension were gone and I couldn't reload LJ. Blindfold very briefly/slowly loaded for me on Wednesday so I was able to read another few fills.

Total comments I posted since outage: two, with great trouble. If LJ had been up, I'd have commented on another 15 or 20 fills for sure (I won't comment un-anon).

I think that's the worst idea in the history of ideas.

Re: Big Bang again

(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Because this week was already packed with a bunch of people who had rescheduled (sometimes several times). It's bad enough when you have upwards of 8 people posting on the same day, but then LJ goes down and no one is posting.

Next week or whenever they have people post (if they even have a real plan and it isn't "oh, post when you want") we'll have 15 big bangs in one day and fuck, it's bad enough posting at the end. Now if you're not a BNF or MNF you'll be forgotten in the chaos. And the stampede for everyone to read FF's errant BB.

It's also not fair, if their plan is to let these people post later, for them to have extra time to polish their story when everyone else didn't get that. It's horrible all around, but I thin there are some things they could do to make it more fair, but I don't trust them to even think of that.

And I do think not planning for something like this is a huge, major mistake on their parts.

Yeah, I posted a fill on Sunday so Monday was supposed to be a day packed with reading and commenting. I managed to get some comments through, but not as many as I would have liked.

I commented on that article saying basically that Randi Zuckerberg ought to pull her head out of her ass. Her "think of the children!" bullshit doesn't fly very far when she works for (and her brother founded) a company that makes its money based on how much of its users' private data it can sell.

Taking away anonymity won't do anything other than lead to more big brother tactics and people possibly getting fired for just living their lives (in ways that people have done for eons but companies never had the right to control before).

I hate to break it to Randi Zuckerburg but not all assholes and cyber bullies on the net are anonymous. In fact, many cyber bullies actually use their real name (teenagers) because it garners a response from their victims in real life. And I'd love to know what her thoughts are on the people that walk around being assholes in the real world with names attached and everything.

I think that she's a ditz and that Facebook is maybe not the root of all evil but it's definitely up there.

Yeah, it's like she's never heard of W*ll Sh*tt*rl*. Some people glory in online bullying using their own names. And other people can only engage in online discourse or activities that are not harmful to others but frowned on by their government (or employers or church or social circles) pseudonymously or anonymously.

Revoking all anonymity online is a great idea only once no government or employer or custody judge or social group will condemn or have a lesser opinion of anyone for sharing ideas about their government maybe one day being less oppressive, or for harmless (in the grand scheme of things) fantasizing about Harry and Draco being deaged back to twelve and fucking each other in the hallways of Hogwarts while non-deaged Hermione spanks them. Until then, online anonymity and the privacy advocates championing it are things I love.

Even though I really wouldn't say anything I wouldn't stand by publicly, I really like the anonymity of meme. I mean sure, you'll get those few bad apples who abuse it, but overall I think it helps people be more honest about things that you might normally want to think about tip toeing around. That's why I like reading the fic discussions, because I've found a lot of the comments to be spot-on.

Yeah, no, what about my right to protect myself from the assholes/criminals/creepsters of humanity without locking myself away in total isolation for the rest of my life?

I love anonymity because it allows me to be a sexual being without being judged or harassed for it in a way I can't escape from. And I really need that sometimes.

Apart from occasionally saying things I wouldn't in namespace (I don't troll but am willing to admit to some unpopular opinions or kinks in anonspace that I wouldn't as a namie), I agree with this a lot.

And I miss fic discussion! I have thoughts on several BB fics that I can't post! Most of the time I can't even see what other nonnies who were able to post in FD thought. ;__;

OP - yes, exactly. There are bullies everywhere, online and off. Sometimes all we have to protect ourselves from them is our anonymity.

Re: Anonymity

(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That is incredibly stupid. Does she propose to end anonymity and pseudonymity in other media as well? No more noms de plume? There are some legal transactions for which use of one's legal name are required, but it has never been the case that artistic and social endeavors and political speech were such transactions. It would be a monstrous invasion of privacy.

I went for a pleasant walk and bought my mother's birthday present and somewhere in there LJ vanished again.

This is making me sad. Have there been any more official statements from LJ?

Good point. How dare people write under names they don't own!

And what about voting? People are still allowed to do that anonymously. They should have to record their votes in their Facebook status, amirite?

I think you're being way too serious business about the politics of BB. Are you the person who freaked out when we had that BB so far rec thread?

Honestly, if you're so bitter about posting schedules and having more time to work and BNFs usurping all the attention, maybe participating in a challenge like BB isn't for you.

I think political dissidents the world over who would be killed for daring express an opinion contrary to that of the regimes under which they live would beg to fucking differ.

Also, as another anon pointed out, she works for "a company that makes its money based on how much of its users' private data it can sell". So LOL and fuck, NO.

I was having a discussion with some of my flist about this, but I'm completely boggled by the more and more people I see linking their real names to their fandom stuff. On one of the kink memes I frequent, we keep getting high schoolers commenting with their Facebook accounts. HELLO, MAKE IT REAL EASY FOR YOUR FUTURE EMPLOYERS TO FIND THE KINKY GAY SEX STORIES YOU WROTE WHEN YOU WERE 17, WHY DON'T YOU?

The only explanation I can come up with is that they don't realize the implications and possible consequences.
