Beta readers for small, less active, fandoms

Problem: I've just found a new show (Oz), and the fandom isn't exactly Supernatural-sized. Fic is a bit hard to come by, but far worse is finding a good beta, one who's familiar with the show, and can do SPAG and characterization.

Make no mistake, I've read some awesome fic, but I've also seen the characterization for certain characters go way off course, and I'd like to make sure I don't make similar mistakes. So, any suggestions? I'm not looking to write a novel, and I'd like to avoid the ff.net beta readers, if at all possible.

Anyone else have trouble finding a good beta for a small, less active, fandom than Supernatural?

You'd be better off using your usual betas, and then once you get a rep asking other people in that fandom to beta for you. If the community is small enough that they only have one central lj comm with open posting, you could try asking for a beta there.

I've thought about this, but part of the reason I don't want to use my usual betas, is I need someone to check for characterization, and they have to be familiar with the show to do that. Not to mention, honestly, I don't see myself really digging in with this fandom; I was just planning on writing a fic or two.
