My friend a few years back knitted some covers for headphones (not ear buds) so they could double as ear warmers. The headphones were cheap and the wool was cheap but the combination was awesome.
Good news! A co-worker's sister was helping with a church craft sale for the holidays so she and I ran over to look. I ended up with some pins, headbands, Bible covers, and some pretty cool rings. Not much for the boys on my list but that was only like $20 and I know my Mom and bff will like it.
Sadly I am not crafty but I like the ornament idea as well, I know I haven't bought any special ones since my nephew was born.
