OT Post

For all of your Off-topic needs.

Thank you for your helful answer, anon! You are right of course and I know that it shouldn't be an issue, but I'm still feeling quite hesistant about it, can't help it. I think I'll go for it later. I like my therapist well enough (or I would have went somewhere else, obviously), but I really want to gain more secure ground first. The main reason I want to talk about it is that fic is something that helps me explore kink and sexuality and that is something I do want to talk about more, sooner or later. And yes, I still feel weird when I talk vaguely about ~friends~ and it's people whose lj I've read for some years. (I feel it's hard to explain that I can actually get more out of that than from some rl relations...).

I brought it up with a therapist a few times, talked about it as something that gives me happiness and social connection. He was cool with it; he was a wrestling and comic book fan himself, so he understood.

But as the other nonnie said, any good therapist will only be concerned with how your fandom activity affects the issue you're in therapy for. Value judgment shouldn't come into it at all, and if it does, they aren't a very good therapist.

priorities?

(Anonymous) 2010-11-30 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
My family is about to move back in with my grandmother, since we won't have to pay rent and can save up some money. She lives in a REALLY small town that is half an hour from any grocery, but what I really cry moar over is the fact that you can't buy wine at the grocery there, and the liquor store is an hour away. Would you drive 2 hours for libations? What else is there to do in the ass-end of nowhere? This will most likely be an enforced liver cleanse. Last time I was there she only had dial-up, too. /wrists On the plus side, I will be smuggling in a large quantity of ganja. All is not lost.

I live in the boonies, too. Buy a keg of beer and put it in the cellar? Or just stick with the ganja. We're really big on the ganja in the ass-end of nowhere. xD

Well, at least there is that. XD Are you proficient at making pot brownies? I need to perfect this method if I'm replacing alcohol with weed. OTOH, maybe that would be wasteful and smoking it is more efficient.

Pot brownies are very inefficient, although delicious. There's also the problem that, once you've eaten one of them, you get the munchies and you want to eat the rest of them because, well, because they're brownies, dude. But you can't! It's very frustrating. xP

Buy a lot of wine and store it in the cellar. Won't turn bad or anything. xD

Heh, most likely we'll wait until there's money again, make the drive, and stock up, yeah. Grandma drinks that cheap boxed wine crap so no joy there (i say cheap, cause there are some great boxed wines now). Last time we stayed with her she accused my mother of drinking her Franzia (?) crap, which, pffft, rather drink mouth wash.

Looking for recs of new, old tv series

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm for a new (to me) series to watch, something that's completed it's run, and is available on DVD. My top choices, so far, are Oz or Deadwood, but I'd like a little feedback before I commit. You guys have any recs for me?

SA Yeah, there should be a "looking" in that first sentence. Sorry.

Oz is weirdly riveting. I burned through the complete box in about a week.

Like the nonnie above, I've heard that Oz is riveting (but I've never seen it, alas).

Do you like quirky, or dark stuff? Genre, or regular drama?

I've fallen in love with Lie to Me recently, and with Dexter. Lie to Me has Tim Roth doing amazing things creating a fabulous bastard-with-a-heart-of-gold character, and Dexter is just plain fun with a twisted but loving soul to it.

ayrt I'll watch pretty much anything. I'm really looking for a series that's over, since I already watch a lot of shows currently on the air (including Lie to Me and Dexter, btw). I also collect DVD seasons, so whatever I watch, I buy first, which is why I like to do a little research.

How's the plotting and characterization? I have a pretty high tolerance, but if it's all rape and violence, I don't know if I can do it. I did find all 6 seasons for 15.99 a piece on Amazon, though.

Well, I'm a Joss fan, so Buffy and Firefly would be my first recs.

The first two seasons of Torchwood, definitely. Amazingly campy show! Plus, canon slash, including a hot kiss between James Marsters and John Barrowman.

And an old 90s quirky dramedy called Northern Exposure was a favorite of mine; great characters in it, good writing, fantastic dialogue.

SA. Here, just to seduce you into the awesomeness that is Torchwood:

I've seen and/or own everything there but Torchwood, but I have a question- do you need to watch Doctor Who, first?

Re: Looking for recs of new, old tv series

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not at all. It stands completely on its own. If you do ever watch Doctor Who, the connections will be apparent and are tons of fun, but there's no need to watch them at all.

Torchwood is glorious, cracky, campy, OTT fun.

Also, don't watch S3. It's the most ridiculous yet depressing thing I've ever seen on tv.

I loved 'Rome'. It has 2 seasons and it's finished. I didn't think it was my thing but I watched a few episodes and I was hooked.

Is anyone else unable to login on twitter? It says my password's wrong, which is not.

It wasn't recognizing my username and password so I tried to reset the password but it asked me for my phone number. I only used my phone to tweet via text messages once or twice, a long time ago. So I filled in my phone number but again, twitter says it's not the right one. Argh! I live outside the US so there's probably some code I need to put before my phone number, but I don't remember what it is. This never happened before! And now I'm locked out from trying too many times.
