Speaking for myself, I don't tend to read/write RPF that much. I usually have to be really drawn in by the story idea - incubus!Misha and socially-awkward!Jensen, for example. Most of my playing around with shippiness is actually on meme. I put down Gen/Misha, for example, even though I've never read or written a fic - I just really enjoy the pairing as a concept, and love hearing about it when people squee on meme.
I think and don't really have much proof, but I still think it, that there's some overlap between people who aren't too involved with RPF and people who like RPF rarepairs. Jared/Jensen is what a large chunk of RPF is about - and if you look at the word cloud, I feel like a lot of those ships are ones that there's substantial fanwork about. Whereas the rarepair cloud doesn't have much Jared/Jensen and has many pairings that I've never seen fanwork for.
