Hmmmm. So far as I know none of my friends are memers, but they were just talking about this in chat a couple of days ago. Is this making the fandom rounds somewhere?

Japan

I really hope all the Japanese nonnies are doing fine.
I was always under the impression that there were quite a lot of them hanging out on the meme.

NCAA March Madness

Okay, nonnies. I don't know a thing about basketball, but I have to enter the office pool anyway. Who's going to win the whole enchilada?

UK, all the way! But it's my Alma mater, so I'm incredibly biased.

That's University of Kansas, right?

Ah. Thank you! I appreciate it.

Politically correct

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
My local newspaper has taken to write a lot of articles lately where African Americans are simply referred to as "blacks". Am I being overly sensitive to think that this is a no-no?

Example of an article peppered with "black(s)/white(s)": http://bit.ly/hmEyBC

Re: Politically correct

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
In terms of black person versus African American, it really depends on local preferences. Either is probably fine. If you have the luxury of knowing what a specific person prefers than you can use that term for them. In something like media, just try to be consistent and sensitive to local preferences (of the relevant race in your area). There's honestly no one right answer to memorize that will work for everyone in every situation for the rest of your life.

In terms of "blacks" versus "black people," yeah, "blacks" sounds skeevy in a sentence. I might use it to label a graph or a chart or something, but the way it's used in the article? No.

IA, and usually I don't mind if people use the term black person in proper context, but this article (and others) struck me as really not-ok...

Just so we're clear, your last "No.", is it for "No, it's not skeevy", or "No. This is not appropriate"? From the sentence before it seems you mean the latter. but I'm running out of brain juices...

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I meant, no, this is not appropriate.

Absolutely fucking insane Twilight fans

Having read this article, anons:

http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/features/2011/04/robert-pattinson-201104

Does it seem like Robert Pattison is on the verge of a nervous breakdown to anyone else? I was just too old for Twilight to be a big thing for me and I'm so fucking glad. We can be batshit as a fandom, but dear god. Nothing like the Twilight fans. 0.o Poor, poor RPattz.

How old are you? I thought mid-forty housewifes made at least half of Twilight's fandom.

My boyfriend rented a big old house in a run-down neighbourhood, with a couple of other guys.

There were a lot of weird things there: stereo speakers in the basement that would speak in tongues, sounds like children's footsteps running in parts of the house where no-one was, strange little-girl voices on the phones (crossed wires, probably, but still spooky). I saw something in his bedroom once, waking in the night to find a figure looming over the bed. I think it was just a night-terror, and the figure was the dressing-gown hung over a closet door. But that has never happened to me before or since.

He had one friend who absolutely refused to go into the basement of that house, and there was a story that someone had overdosed down there back in the 70s.

After he moved out, the people who moved in found a cloth doll of a little girl with pins in it in the attic. She put it back! I don't know why, I'd have burned the thing immediately. With salt, if I'd been watching SPN back then.

As far as I know, the doll was still in the house when it was bulldozed to make way for condos a couple of years ago. IDK if the condos are haunted - maybe I should write a fic where Sam & Dean have to track down the remains of that doll :)

IA, nonnie. I haven't watched any of the movies, but I quite liked him in HP, and he seems like a perfectly nice person with a pretty wicked sense of humour. But the whole fan thing is fucking insane, and I feel honestly bad for him. Although I guess when it's all too much, he can always go home and salve his troubles by rolling around on giant piles of money, so there's that :)

OMG I came here to start a "So, how about them ponies, hmm?" thread... BUT THERE ALREADY IS ONE!!

Those ponies are up to something, I tell ya.

...Now I can add it to my long list of shameful secrets (wincest, bdsm fic, bdsm incest fic, RPF porn, kink memes, Glee...)

I'll be rocking myself better in the corner.

looking for input

Has anyone used a resume/cover letter-writing service? I've been very reluctant to use them in the past due to their cost ($250+ a pop), but six months surviving on freelance work is making me reconsider.

Any tips or recommendations of something that worked for you (or even someone you know) would be truly appreciated.

IDK about where you live and what's your area exactly, but IME handing out resumes can only do so much. The only thing that's guaranteed to work and that you need to advance is connections, people to recommend you, call you up to participate in a project etc. Sucks for people like me who don't like playing the game but there it is :\

Re: looking for input

(Anonymous) 2011-03-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the advice nonnie. I always figured that resumes were limited in how much they can do for you, but where I live the only option for new graduates is to work for the gov't (I'm not a ctz) and that's just not possible, so I've been looking nationwide. Networking is kind of epically difficult because of that. I've thought of relocating to a city with better networking possibilities, take on flipping burgers until something better comes along, but that's a huge decision to make and it kind of freaks me out.

I guess I'm going to hold on to my peer-evaluated resume for now then. I really wish I could network more effectively, prove myself a bit more. If you don't mind me prodding your brain some more, what do you think of contacting companies and offering to volunteer to remotely participate on projects? Too forward/weird/impossible or what? I figured if I can't find work around me, at least that could get someone to recommend me in the future if I do well enough...

I appreciate your reply, nonnie!

DA.

Firstly, I didn't even know that resume/cover letter-writing services existed - I've always just written my own, sometimes using examples that I've found via google as a guide; other times just getting input from friends and family on how it sounded/read.

Secondly, I think contacting companies that you'd be interested in working for is a great idea. Even if you don't get paid, it's great work experience and another thing to put on your resume. If you don't get contacted about work experience with them, then that's cool, at least you've put your name out there and they know you're interested in their organisation.

ayrt. Thanks nonnie. I think part of the problem is the lack of experience, so I'll give this free telework project a go. It can't hurt, and it helped that you think it might increase my exposure while looking for real work. Plus it will help me stay sharp, I hope.

Thanks again for both your insights!
