I haven't read the story, but I know what you mean about In & Out. I recently saw it again the other day, and I was surprised at how ... homophobic, for lack of a better word, the sympathetic "nice" characters came off.

It's like the first time I watched South Pacific, and I was like, so the big moral dilemma is that her stepkids will be half-Asian? Really?

I still have massive love for In & Out, because I remember seeing it for the first-time in the theater, and I remember the huge, huge discussion around the fact that Kevin Kline and Tom Selleck were willing to kiss each other on-screen, but yeah, time marches on and all that. I don't even know if the movie would make sense to a younger person. There certainly wouldn't be a media frenzy over a gay teacher these days.
