Big Bang/Exchange Fic Discussion #1

Post your threads for Big Bangs and exchange fics here.

Format like so:

SUBJECT: Title [Pairing, Rating] by AUTHOR
CONTENT: Art by whoever

http://url of the master post on the BB comm.

FUCK YOU, BE WANKIER!

I'm trying to increase the comment count by wanking. We're still 700 comments from 5,000. >:(

I am le tired, can I have a nap and then fire ze missiles?

Or let's take this thread and run with it! Just taking a cursory glance from the discussion here and the threads from the last few pages, Spermy's template is defunct and (maybe) no longer relevant. Do-over?

Okay, I can go with this. Given the inclusion of exchanges and challenges, the template really isn't appropriate any longer.

...

I think I'm agreeing with you, which is not conducive to wank. Dammit.

Then we can discuss/argue on what a new template should look like. I'll start. This one:

CHALLENGE: TITLE [FANDOM, PAIRING, RATING] by AUTHOR

would be the most comprehensive for the thread title, but titles tend to go long, and I do recall quite a few threads cutting off because of the length. I'd say move the pairing and/or rating into the body of the comment itself, yes/no?

Excellent. I agree about the length. Wrt "fandom", you're talking about SPN versus RPF? Or about crossovers? If it's the latter, I'd move "fandom" to the body of the comment itself. The rating, too, but I'd leave the main pairing in the header. People are more interested in pairing than in rating, I think.

In case of exchanges, the template should be changed to include the recipient's name instead of the author's. Prompt in the body of the comment.

Yes, when I said "fandom", I meant SPN vs RPF. I wasn't really thinking about crossovers, though when I've made threads before I list the crossover fandom in the body of the comment. If it isn't a shipfic, it gets replaced with a "gen" label.

I was thinking it'd be cool if the artist can be included in the subject title as well, which has happened already here: http://spnanonhaven.livejournal.com/1635.html?thread=54419043#t54419043 which now that I think about it, might be the first time on meme? But that may be too cluttered.

If the rating is to be moved to the comment body itself, then I think it would also be helpful to have the word count there. But with thousand separator commas, please! (PLEASE, PLEASE, NONNIES.)

So the title can be:

CHALLENGE: TITLE [SPN/RPF, PRIMARY PAIRINGS/GEN] by AUTHOR

And the body can be

RATING, WORD COUNT

Art by ARTIST

MASTERPOST LINK

OTHER PAIRINGS, CROSSOVER WITH OTHER FANDOM, ETC.

Unless other nonnies think the rating should be in the thread title?

The reversebang (if it's still active this year) would have a different format, highlighting the artists instead.

No opinion on exchange formats, though. I'm one of those nonnies who doesn't like that exchange fics have their individual threads.

I like this option, I think artist in the header might leave some too long, I already had to juggle a few with long fic titles.

For the main bb, I'd love summaries over here too. With 25+ fics getting posted in a week, I quickly lose track, and I can never remember the damn titles.

Agreed, summaries would be great!

But summaries might be a bit of a grey area... People do quote them for recs and delicious bookmarks, but I can just see angry authors coming down on meme for stealing their words or something to that effect.

The pairing should cover the fandom, though, unless it's a crossover. You don't want to require to much in the thread title, because long story titles tend to get truncated as it is and author names get cut off and it's this whole thing that makes thread tracking annoying.

I vote for fandom only in the case of crossovers.

Also, there will be a reversebang this year.

That doesn't work for gen fic. So either the fandom is always listed, or it's never listed and gen fic gets some other label to show what fandom it is.

But then we're back to the headers not being consistent. That's why I like the template the other nonnie suggested up thread, one size fits all bigbangs.

I think the template works for *most* things. There's no need to throw it out completely.

Reviving this thread! So far the consensus is generally leaning towards having the thread titles be:

CHALLENGE: TITLE [PRIMARY PAIRINGS/GEN] by AUTHOR

and thread comments be:

RATING, WORD COUNT

Art by ARTIST

MASTERPOST LINK

OTHER PAIRINGS, CROSSOVER WITH OTHER FANDOM, ETC.

Which removes fandom listing from the header (though to be fair it was never in the header to begin with). So an example threader header will be:

--------------------------------------------

Rarepairs_BB: Everybody's a Critic [Atropos/Adam] by mysticsodom

Art by [livejournal.com profile] frank

R, word count: 23,500

http://rarepairs_bb.livejournal.com/766.html

Other pairings: Sam/Impala, Dean/Dodge Charger

--------------------------------------------

Like, dislike, other comments? I actually miss having the rating in the thread title.

Would Spanky like to weigh in? For all I know they want to keep Spermy's template.

I wouldn't mind keeping rating in the thread title. But basically I just came here to tell you that I love you lots for using Adam/Atropos as the example.

I like this and will definitely consider it.

I do like having a rating as well and I'd really like to keep the character count down, so maybe we could truncate the challenge title to "SPNJ2BB: TITLE [FIRST PAIRING LISTED/GEN, RATING] by AUTHOR" or something like that.

But summaries and commentary in the thread starters will be a definite "No", I think.

HOHOHO, and here I thought we were going to go back to the way the fic discussion post started and not list the challenge in the title at all for the main BB's fics.

I also support the rating being kept in the title.

If that is what the majority of anons wish to do, it's fine with me. But I just thought it might be a bit easier to sort through, considering there could be any number of Big Bangs going on at once.

I agree, keep the challenge title in the header. SPNJ2BB or even just BB would work.

But if we just use BB I don't think it would be any more clear than not naming the challenge at all; if it's going to be there I think it should be made clear which BB it is at least.

Yeah, there'll be quite a few big bangs posting over the summer, I think that [livejournal.com profile] crossbigbang [livejournal.com profile] crowley_bigbang and [livejournal.com profile] sncross_bigbang all start posting soon.

By commentary, do you mean the other pairings and word count, or are you including fandom as well?

Why no to the idea of summaries? Worry about wank, or to much clutter?

Not the AYRT, but I'm guessing that commentary refers to personal comments, like "I've been looking forward to this fic!" eg. http://spnanonhaven.livejournal.com/1635.html?thread=54418787#t54418787

And please keep the colon to separate the challenge from the title! It isn't one continuous line of information, or the format would be "challenge title pairing rating by author" with no separators whatsoever.
