Yes and no. Do schools have prom-like things? Sure. Usually homecoming rather than end of the year, though. But mainly...the cool kids don't go to such balls. Hell, I wasn't even cool at my large undergrad, but I knew better than to go to the homecoming dance.

It was different at my college, official dances weren't uncool, in that the ticket sales were usually fundraisers for something or other. But they tended to be somewhat formal affairs, not for dates. You only went if you were in a steady relationship, like a practice run of going to a company party with your spouse. If you actually wanted to party, you went to someone's house off-campus, and you certainly didn't need a date for that.

So the set-up with the "Freshman Ball" and especially Dean and Castiel's anxiety over asking each other out and then sharing their feelings seemed very high school to me.

“So…” Castiel begins, “Are you going to the Freshman’s Ball?”

Dean’s heart starts to speed up. “I don’t know. Haven’t really thought about it. Are you going?” He tries to sound casual.

Castiel nods. “Yes, I thought so. Anna asked if I’d like to go with her.”

“Shouldn’t the guy ask the girl?”

“I suppose so. I wasn’t going to go but then, it’s the Freshman’s Ball, so I suppose you’re kind of expected to go. We’re just going in the hope Ash will bring along some of his home brew.” Castiel smiles. “You should go; it could be fun.”

That part made me eyeroll. I know these times are a bit more conservative than when I came of age, but is it really that odd for a woman to ask a guy out?
