“Wait,” said Sam, his puzzled frown still in place. “You said Middle-earth. You mean like Lord of the Rings Middle-earth?”

“Geek,” Dean muttered.

But... hasn't Dean has referenced Lord of the Rings in canon.
I like the art. Not going to read the fic.

Multiple times. And his favourite song is Ramble On so obv he is not clueless about lord of the rings.

I just back-clicked out of some other story last week in which Dean refers to Gollum as something like "that monkey thing from that movie". The hell, author. It was posted not long after the very direct LotR reference in 5.02.

In the author's defense, show can't seem to figure out if Dean gets geeky references or not. See Dean not knowing what World of Warcraft is one minute but knowing about a D12 is the next.

(I am not the author, I'm just someone who gets pissed off when show messes with my 'Dean is a geek' characterization)

Otoh, even as a geek, you won't know everything. I can give you a run-own of what Vulcan marriage entails, but I don't know shit about BSG. Though, admittedly, most geeks have at least *heard* of WoW.

I think it's consistent with Dean being book- and movie- but not computer-savvy. He probably knows what a D12 is from playing D&D in high school or something, when tabletop culture wasn't full of people who are also computer gamers.

Oh my god, I don't know anything about D&D but now I really want fic where Dean is new at school (natch) and somehow becomes friends with the nerds who teach him to play D&D and he decides it's really fun. And it's weird because usually Dean tries being the cool guy who gets all the girls, but he tries reinventing himself and why not since he knows he's only going to be there for a few weeks anyway?

oh hs!dean. poor bb.

Are you me? Because I've wanted this for years (especially since watching the last episode of Freaks and Geeks). It's my headcanon.

ayrt. I have never seen Freaks & Geeks, so I am pretty sure I am not you. But I am now in love with this idea. I'm going to write it!

Sometime next year, when I'm done with all of my WIPs, of course...

Yeah, but most tabletop gamers at least know what World of Warcraft is, even if it's just to make fun of it. Or rather, anyone who would make comicon references would probably now what WoW is.

I'm positing that he hasn't kept up with tabletop, and that the last time he played was before WoW.

How about comicon then? That didn't become a big event until 2000 or so.

we can play this game all day, but the end fact show is pretty inconsistent on whether or not Dean will get a geek reference.

Has he mentioned Comicon? I don't remember that.

It's possible to go to comic book and SF cons and not be aware of World of Warcraft. Exhibit A: my father.

Same episode as the d12 and WoW reference, nonnie. :D

And yeah, it's possible to know about comic conventions (though comicon is a specific series of conventions-ones that have really exploded in popularity over the last ten years) and know about D12's and Star Trek and not know about World of Warcraft or Lovecraft. I'm sure someone out there fits that role. But it's also possible to be into Tolkien and have gollum's name slip his mind, or have Dean make fun of Sam for being into it (even if he's secretly into it too). Canon supports Dean inconsistently being into geeky things (or inconsistently admitting being into geeky things). I personally think he would have been cool with a Middle Earth reference, but I could see how the author would think otherwise.

yeah but there's a difference between dean not getting all geeky references, and dean not getting a reference to something canon has shown he knows about by having him reference it.

I'm not saying that he should get all geeky references, but the fact that show has him not get some major ones (HP Lovecraft, World of Warcraft, ect, Sam being surprised that Dean reads) does mean that I can see how some viewers might construe it as 'not a geek'. Especially since Dean's reaction to not getting any sort of geek reference is 'of course I don't know that, I'm too cool'.

I don't think it's right, but I can get where the author is getting that characterization.

Dean, in general, doesn't seem to be aware of stuff on the internet besides porn. But he's geeky about book stuff. That seems pretty consistent characterization to me.

Except for when he hasn't heard of HP Lovecraft and Sam's surprised when Dean reveals he's read Vonnegut.

Sam's surprise would be Sam's issue, though, not Dean's. As for Lovecraft, it's hardly a geek staple. It seems to be more of a university thing from the discussions we had on meme when that episode aired. Maybe people have heard of Cthulhu, but there's no way you can rank it with LoTR.

Some people decided it was a college thing. I still think that was a strange bit of characterization, considering how much time they spend researching horror and monster myths-a lot more than the average high school dropout.

But it's also how he responds to not getting a geek reference-almost every single time, it's 'I don't get that reference because I'm not a geek like you geeks, geek'.

It's not whether he knows about or enjoys geeky things, it's whether or not he seems himself as more or less geeky than Sam, and whether he'd take the opportunity to call Sam a geek if it came up.

I'm not even saying I agree with the author's choice to make him call Sam a geek in this instance. I'm just saying that I know where they got that characterization from, and if Dean called Sam a geek for mentioning a Lord of the Rings reference in season seven, I wouldn't be surprised. It's not a wholly out of character moment, even if it's not a characterization I prefer.

Has Dean ever called Sam a geek, though? He's called him a nerd, but that's really not the same thing.

That's the line you're setting now for fanfic characterization? Dean can't use a word he hasn't used on the show? Really? How do you read anything, then?

He's certainly implied it many, many times over the years. It's more of a season one and two deal, but it's there. I'm not about to comb through transcripts to see if he's ever specifically called Sam a geek, though.

I also really can't see Dean being the sort who would have an argument about the difference between nerd and geek.
